Wrapped up a fun little project for a customer today. Retired pediatric surgeon. He has Parkinsons (not severe, but sad) and needed assistance getting up and down the deck stairs to get to his grill. Decided to use the 1" black pipe and fittings from HD. Had to degrease and clean with Acetone before spray painting. House was framed 24" OC, so I was limited to mounting locations for the blocks (cedar 2x6). Blocks attached to studs with structural screws and capped with aluminum flashing tucked up behind the cedar clapboards. The stud locations worked out perfectly. The railing ended up being just over 7'. It's rugged and they were very happy. I stained the deck for same family last fall.

Thanks. I ended up being about an 1" short on the bar to hit dead center on each block. When I had the pipe cut, I failed to account for the fact that the threads are tapered. The elbows/pipe were still loose at the correct length. Can't have the rail moving around, so I had to tighten each end a couple of turns to snug it up, thus losing that inch. I just tried to make it look better on the top bracket as that's where most people will be looking Most will never notice and I don't mention things like that to clients. It still bugs me. Lesson learned for next time.

Teflon Tape or 2part epoxy to fill the loose gap? :notsure:

I put my OCD on a shelf and determined it would be just fine as is. Only off by about 1/2" on each block. Three people were there and didn't notice (or didn't mention it). It's not crown moulding.

    Lol best answer possible…
Installing black pipe is so tricky.
Doing it alone makes it 10 times worse…

    HOT HOT HOT.
Not looking forward to racing this weekend.
    Heat index 100°.
Going to have to take care of ourselves more than the car.
    Be safe everyone.
    THAT’S AN ORDER.

    Good Morning stockers

so Tuesday night Beryl dumped a waterfall as it passed over. I’m old. I love storms. One thing about the Midwest is: thunderstorms are awesome. You feel and hear them coming well before they arrive. The plains make them more dramatic.
With all my years experience I can honestly say I have never seen as much water fall as I did Tuesday night. Washed out my gravel driveway. Spent the day yesterday with payloaders making it passable again for normal vehicles. Crazy.

now it’s my east coast peeps turn. Stay dry!
