Hunting those snowshoe hares early before the snow gets full cover is funny ... they hold so still thinking you can't see them. Ptarmigan can be the same.
Thank you for your stories ... I enjoy them immensely. Always heard the northern tier bases did a good job of taking care of families. What's your opinion?

EDIT: Your install looks very clean!

    Thank you for the compliments.
We didn't notice the AF taking care of families, but they started doing more of that after the "Peace Dividend" of 1991. AFA did more, and Mom would ask me, "Why are we being asked to contribute to the care of veterans?" That was the promise made by Congress in exchange for taking the oath to serve, the future provision for life after service. I'd ask the Navy recruiters at UMontana as they were packing up, and offering us the cardboard posters and Skilcraft pens (They don't work very well, low-bid contract."), "If I sign up for three years, could I retire with twenty? My first seventeen were with the Air Force." "Um, no, but that sounds like a great idea!"
The NoDak bunnies ate better on the farms, and tasted better than the few around Cordova that ate tree bark. I did find one ptarmigan while I was hunting at Cordova. I opened the door of the '71 Scout II and a white ptarmigan was just a step beyond, obviously blown off the mountain to the edge of Allaganik Slough Road during a windy morning with heavy rain. We, including the Brittany and the bird, were all rather miserable, so I closed the door, and hoped the birds would survive as we drove to the end of the road, turned around at the launch ramp and went home.
John Ford's film "Report from the Aleutians" describes the weather of the North Gulf of Alaska (NGOA) coast more than eight decades later. Dad talked me into applying for the USFS volunteer fish biologist job at Sitka in 1982, as he'd enjoyed his TDY stints at Elmendorf AFB in support of Operation Chrome Dome as KC-135s flew to keep B-52s in the air around the clock in the 1960s. He and Billy Curtis would get their railroad tickets during the week, walk out the gate to flag down the train and head north to camp and fish during their weekends off. Amazing stories... Eielson AFB was recruiting for an entire KC-135 crew, and theirs was interested. It was fortunate that one of the crew knew someone up there, called and learned of the loss of a RC-135 (Eareckson AFS, Shemya) with crew, so they declined. Good thing as growing up in Fairbanks would likely have dissuaded me (Sorry for the big word, guys) from going to the 49th state, let alone living there for almost thirty years (so I escaped becoming a volunteer in the Pioneers of Alaska).
The Barcelona Red's due for its annual Parker Toyota service (last spring) as soon as I get it cleaned up and make sure it's running as it's been in the garage since we started seeing snow last November (October?). The dealer should be able to connect the LCE exhaust header flange to the first cat (and replace the corroded heat shield band hardware), and I'll ask about having them install Bilstein 4600 or 5100 shocks now or later as I bought a set of each while prices were going up (5% between ordering and delivery an week later! Trade goods for the future...)

I'm not arguing with you. I definitely feel old, though according to that scale I'm not quite Gen X.

Go with the 5100s ... if I have it right, Stitch (2019 TRD OR DCSB) came with 4600s ... I upgraded to 5100s and could tell, still can, a significant difference.

I gotta look up that movie sometime.

EDIT: My Chief enlisted in 1970 ... he's still pissed at the $50-$60 we (retirees) pay monthly for Tricare health coverage. "They told me free for life when I enlisted."
