You'd do fine. The work you've posted is nice.

You can relaminate Formica, it’s difficult, and not recommended. A lot depends on if you can remove the original substrate/ particle board from underneath, backsplash can be tricky as well. If it’s a “postform” top, round where the top meets the backsplash , it’s pretty much a no go

For the cost of a couple sheets of 3/4 sanded plywood I'll rip out the entire base. Debating getting rid of the cooktop for a conventional stove. Cooktop has been the bane of my existence since moving in

Contact adhesive bonds better with particle board than sanded plywood, also much cheaper. Around here you can buy particle board already sized for countertops, 25”

Hubs just built an outfeed table and did formica over MDF with a maple edge band. Contact adhesive rolled on, routed the edges, and added a small chamfer. Not sure if thats similar but it was pretty simple. Just had to put sticks under the surface and ease on, otherwise it sticks to itself where you dont want it to and turns into a shitshow:notsure:

No different than painting a wall and have someone lean against it.
Or drive your new car to the store and park away from everyone and someone put a dent in it.
Or refinishing a bowling ball and the guy throws it and it gets stuck in the return on the first throw.
    Comes back all ground up.
When something is new or refinished, there is a 50% greater chance of damage.
Is that what they call reverse karma???? lol

You can use a heat gun on an edge of the laminate to soften the adhesive enough to peel back the laminate, then use a small dowel rod to hold them apart. Spray acetone into the joint, it will soften the adhesive so that you can keep peeling back the laminate. Use more dowel rod to keep the laminate separated from the base, use a putty knife to keep working the joint area with the acetone. It will be a sticky mess.

This also works, but like you say, going to be a sticky mess. I’ve done this before when I screwed up and got it stuck in the wrong spot :annoyed:

I've helped a contractor buddy with formica on counters but nothing that wide...that's frightening

A lifetime ago I worked in a cabinet shop, that was their preferred method for re-skinning old counter tops for "budget" refreshes. We would pull off the old counter tops from the customers house then re-skin the original bases ( if they were in good shape). I think that the laminate sheets came in a 5' x 12' size, they were not fun to wrangle into place. They let the sheet overhang everywhere then used a laminate router trimmer to cut it down to size.

My house needs a new kitchen , $ . The cabinets are nailed to the wall, both uppers and lowers, the countertops are nailed down and then laminated in place. Complete laminate backsplash glued to the wall and then the cabinets were hung afterwards, with the unsightly metal corner piece. This old house :D
