Remembered Dad while working on the 1962 (or earlier?) Grumman Sportboat that he ordered after we moved to Rapid City, SD in 1959, where he was one of the first three officers arriving to establish a new KC-135A squadron. Acting squadron commander when the other two guys were absent (as a young captain, and a navigator yet!) as he told me during the ten years after I retired from AK and before his passing, when his main job was to be sure he'd distributed the numerous jobs among the incoming officers (morale, laundry, BOQ, and on and on...). He managed two 3-year tours there, but that was all the AF desired anyone to have, so the next was 3 years when our fam lived next to Kaneohe MCAS while Dad commuted to Hickam AFB, before he stashed us in CO while he went to C-130 training (and fishing TVA lakes with the boat, cartopped on the Olds station wagon). When he returned from SEA, he made sure he had the letter that he'd served 12 months in VN during the 16 months in C-130s. One more tour back in KC-135s at Grand Forks AFB, the only place we ever lived in base housing... He and my maternal (Swede) grandma taught me to fish! I gained more discipline and memorized the songs with my friends at the MCAS, while Ray Anti, XO of MACS-2, was in charge of the Junior Rifle Club, where we'd shoot one afternoon a week on their range. I was glad we left soon after VMF(AW)-212 gave up their gunfighter F-8E Crusaders for the F-4J. Mom and I always hoped that all the young boys rapidly becoming men returned home safely as K-Bay was the last opportunity to see families in the country they'd be heading west from.
"Why do we do this to ourselves?" Because we belong to the family of man, because the next generation will be carrying the tradition and our memories into the future, and maybe because when I went to my daughter's wedding rehearsal the day after Christmas, I was able to tell her intended, "You do know that I'm not 'giving her away.' It's going to cost you." Paramedic Paul replied, "I know." Great guy! (They're often asking when I'll come to visit and spend time training Hank the Cow Dog, their blue heeler/German shepherd cross, who barks at everybody, including Paul who picked him out. In their Christmas photocard, he's the one with the Scooby Doo expression.)
Waxed the Grumman Sportboat Monday afternoon, when I was able to leave as my other SIL took over to assemble his 6-year old daughter's Marble Mania project from Michael's Creatology section. Boats are fun to mess about with, though the maintenance provides great exercise. Put a coat of sealer on the wood transom pads since they dried out over the decades, replaced with Thai teak Dad brought home from his Far East time.
Ordered a pair of new Douglas fir oars from Sawyer, and have another pair of new oarlock bushings from Marathon Boat somewhere... Replacing the first pair took awhile, as the compressed paper version requires patience and perseverance to remove. (The old compressed paper sewer pipes are stout, too, until they collapse in the ground. No wonder my friends had great salmonberry crops in their backyard!) Have a great week!

Good morning stockers. After the past 2 days of nonstop 50° monsoons (and at least one more on tap) I'm guessing that the spring rain has finally arrived

As I made the truck payment last week, I realized that I only have 4 more before the loan is paid off. I've been on the prowl for a 5th gen T4R for a bit and I've found a few that catch my attention. The trim level that I want always seems to be located in CO, UT, NM or NV. Now the thought of starting over with a car loan over my head is weighing in even though I really don't like the Taco very much.

Has anyone else been in that situation?

I'm with you, Jim. My prescription hasn't changed much in more than thirty years, but I need to replace glasses when the polycarbonate lenses get too scratched. Dad told me to stay with clear vision, "After 40, they'll push for bifocals." Still on Lumigan, with 6-month pressure checks, like with the oil...

Also, my old company is laying off and firing people left and right from what a few of the dudes told me. Theyre slowed to a crawl even though most other companies are slammed. The greed catching up with them apparently. Do I feel bad? No.

Cut out early from the site today because someone decided to walk off with my M18 hammer drill and high output battery. Gotta say thats a first for me and I hope the torque preventer fails and he breaks his fucking arm and/or knocks his teeth out with it. Karma always finds a way.
