Nothing new, unfortunately. A life time ago when I worked construction for a GC framing houses, complete tool belts would magically disappear out of the cabs of trucks. Every time some unknown sub would show up with a few dirt bag laborers, something would go missing. Battery tools were just a new fad (Makita 8 4V drills were the hot ticket)

Extension cords, levels, Stanley tape measures, hole saw blades.. shit like that needed to stay with in arms reach or it would grow legs.

I never had tools come up missing on job sites, but I’ve been out of the trades for a few years. But at the end of the day, shit got locked up, ether in a gang box or a job trailer. My table saw and miter saw stayed on site, but were chained up at night. Thieves suck!

I dont leave tools on site overnight, ever. It was the middle of the work day and my shit was all piled together while I ran down to button up the panel. I was in the middle of working.
