How old were you when you had your kids? I was 39 when my first one was born, and 43 when the second one came along. Both are all growed up and out on their own now, I retired a year ago at 65. At least, retired from what I did for 36 years, but have taken up a second life (not career) of landscaping work for 1/4 what I made before. It's much more about staying busy than it is about getting rich. SS and pension take care of paying the bills, investments about getting rich. The landscaping $$ is for play and new toys.

Those next 5 years will go by much quicker than you think. You'll wonder if it will ever get there, and then all of a sudden, you're done.

Be 52 in about 3 weeks. My youngest just turned 13. So basically 39 when she was born. Most of our friends are empty nesters....or almost are.

Finished this up, waiting on the wallpaper we ordered which will go in the panels. Simple but gets the job done.

Just wait until you're out with your daughter, and one of her friends who doesn't know you asks, "Is that your grandpa?"

Happened to me when I picked up my youngest one day at school, when she was in 3rd grade. The friends my wife and I see most often have been empty nesters for quite longer than we have been, but our kids grew up playing with their kids. My oldest (27) has been gone for 9 years, including her college years, and the youngest (22) has been gone for 4 years, when she went off to college; she graduated in 3 years and is working now . Oldest is married now, no grandkids yet. They're not in a hurry, and neither am I. Her husband is working on his flight ratings to be a commercial pilot.

Oh it's happened several times....especially when she was younger...and especially when I'm full on beard.

I was at Dunks with my dad when I was maybe 14 (which wouldve put him around 44-45) and the cashier asked “is your wife ordering anything as well?” Hes got those good-assed genetics and looks a lot younger than he is but we were like ‘lady..’ o_O:puke:
