This is what my service manager told me. He said he actually owns a 2nd gen 2012 Tacoma that does the same thing but his does it around 70 to 72 mph and has done it since day one. He said he has heard a few others inquire about the howl in the 3rd gen but that happens at different speeds for different people. Replacing the rear end would not make a difference in his words. My howl is very slight and you have to be listening for it to be heard. He noted his 2nd gen has the howl loud at 70 mph but has never had an issue otherwise.

He then went on to state to me that Toyota likes to build the backspacing a bit loose on these rear ends so people can get as many miles out of them as they can...that can create the howl here and there (his words not mine). He stated it is a quirk of these trucks and that I should not be worried at all. My Nissan truck before I had this Tacoma had a metallic slapping sound under heavy load acceleration for every year I owned it coming from the engine bay that could never be found, so I am used to vehicle having a quirk or two comes with the territory.

Again I would just get it documented as other have done here (including myself). Will give some peace of mind. They marked my occasional howl as a normal characteristic of the vehicle so I am good with that. That's all I was looking for was to have it documented and confirmed good.

No problems here. But I think many of the issues come from people's expectations of the vehicle. They want it to crawl up the side of a mountain at an 80% grade, be faster than the V8 sports cars, haul just as much as full size trucks, get the gas mileage of a Prius, be able to purchase whatever aftermarket part they want and have it covered under the Toyota warranty, and expect ALL the bugs to be worked out of a new generation vehicle. Which as many people talk about consumer reports on here, consumer reports always mentions never buying the first year of a new generation anything. Just sayin...

    This could be the case.

As a side note: I bought a LT-1 Caprice Wagon with 109,000 miles that had a rear end which whined. I figure the previous owner had it at the dragstrip with sticky tires a few times. I put about 112,000 more miles on it and paid no attention to the rear.

Not the issue this thread is about. The howl is for real and now I feel like I can hear it all the time. I might check out my LCAs. Maybe I need the plugs.

Also my radio was at 28 and I could hear the howl at 55mph. So that's annoying.

Bigger tires wheels and lift may cause problems with driveline warranty. That's why I'm holding off doing any lifting and putting oversized tires on.

It was cognitive reinforcement, the positive was people replying giving you feedback, my negative feedback to help you and others out next time. So next time look to see if there's a place for the question you're about to ask.

First search for if a similar thread exists, reply your question if you get no replies or answers, then create a new thread.

Actually I would've been happier if you didn't use the title.. it's a fire starter.

To be fair this thread was intended to be the opposite of the other thread(s). More like "can you live with it" than "no I can't"

The thread was directed at people who are happy with their truck. Which I am, therefore I stated my opinion.

I can hear it on mine, especially when going slightly downhill around 55mph. On and off the throttle, it comes and goes with the throttle application.

It was directed at people who are happy with their truck and have the diff howl.

Not so much "people who are happy with their truck and write off people's complaints/concerns."

    Wrong

From the OP: My question for those of you who like your trucks: Do you have the rear end howl?

Okay donkey. (Edit: this should have said okay dokey, f'in auto correct, I wasnt trying to call Ironwoodsman an ass) So coming here to tell us you don't have the howl and we're all Nancys because we don't like our rear end sounding like a GD bell.

Not really the intent of the OP I'm guessing, particularly since he has it too.
