Toyota has to be aware of it and realize it is abnormal.

Picking up my '17 Tacoma TRD OR Auto with tow package (2100 miles on the odometer) from the dealership today. Brought it in yesterday for the following issues:
    1. Delayed shift
    2. 200 RPM jump while pulling in or backing out of garage. Funny thing is that it happens whether the engine is warm or cold.
    3. Sporadic shifting on level grades. Usually happens over 50mph.

Had a long conversation with the tech that serviced it. He was skeptical about it being low on tranny fluid, but low and behold, it was 3/4 quart low. The engine software was already updated a month ago when I brought it in for an oil change at 1200 miles. I love how they all act like the problems don't exist.

I should have purchased the manual or a Tundra.

1700 miles in and no complaints. I love my truck! I attempted to see if I could hear the howl that so many people complain about and if it's there I can't hear it. Every vehicle has quirks and until I see where the howl has something to do with the rear end falling apart then I'm not going to worry about it. I had a corvette that made a loud pop sound every time you put it in reverse and turned the steering wheel. It did it for years and no mechanic could every tell me what caused it. My Buick would do some crazy hard shifting going up hill and it too did it for years and never had any transmission issues. I just learned to live with the quirks.

I don't disagree, but it's not debilitating to the vehicle's functionality at this time, so I'm pretty sure the correct reaction isn't trying to get the truck lemoned or a whole stock pile of "this truck sucks dick" posts on a public forum which gets you nowhere anyway.

No complaints here on my 2017 TRD OR. Not sure what the diff howl is, but then again I can't hear much noise over my Discoverer STT Pros :)

The truck is great and much better than the 1st and 2nd gen I've owned in the past. I'm a big fan of the mid-range/top end that the motor has and is WAY better than my other Tacomas or the 2016 4 Runner I use when I visit my parents. Where the older motors tend to sound out of breath at the top end, this one just keeps going.

Every car has something you can find to complain about. Instead, I've found lots that I like about this car and keep enjoying it. No buts here ;)

Glad to hear you do not have any diff howl, seems to be a hit or miss problem.

That's my point. It's not the same for everyone. Some howl louder than others (like girls in bed). I'm not at all of the "OMG HOWLING DIFF. I PAID 35K FOR THIS TRUCK. CAN I GET IT LEMONED????" camp but it absolutely should be remedied.

Do you even read Bro? I hear it loud and clear over the radio. Sell it? Do you work for your money? You wanna give me the thousands of dollars I'd loose? Toyota loves customers like you, just willing to belly up and take it.

This is not unfounded random complaining. I have jumped through all the dealer and corporate hoops just to be told that it's "normal". Toyota is well aware of this and chooses not to address it at this time. They told me they would keep an eye on it and not to worry because if the diff fails it would be covered under warranty. I don't think the diff will fail but I shouldn't have to listen to this noise for the next 10 years.

I have a 2017 TRDOR. It was howling from day 1. However, I find my experience with the howling is different than most people here, the howling diminished with time and now it's almost gone, and hopefully won't come back. I'm at 8000km, and only hear it slightly at around 40km/h or 25mph on very light throttle. Also, the transmission feel much better, less gear hunting and the truck doesn't seem to lag as much.

That is a good point, if it were howling on the test drive then l bet many would pass on the purchase.

I like my truck and all, but I'd rather it made low end torque.

And if you lift it they will probably try to fight you over warranty issues.

I think they gave him an extended warranty for free for all the problems.
