Mine was originally G2 gears but they messed up on some stuff so my gears are no the yukon gears I believe. 4.56s front and back for my 4x4. I think you should go with 4.56s and youll be happy.

In mine I'm at 2250-2300 rpm at 80 mph. I'm in a 08 prerunner with 285/75r16 with stock 3.73 gears. What gears are you running in your '03?? Are they stock??

Ok. Nice chart. I see that at a lower gear ratio of 4.56 over stock I'll be running a higher rpm than stock. I would assume that this would equate to a higher consumption of gas therefore yielding a lower mpg rating. Would this be correct??

yours is a 5 speed auto. overdrives are probably different from 1st to 2nd gen and then your also really low because of the tire size with the diff ratio

Unfortunately, it isn't quite that clear cut. Around town, you might see a mpg increase since the engine isn't 'working' as hard to accelerate you (where most of your gas is consumed). However, on the interstate, you will generally see a degradation in fuel economy. I live in SoMD, and since most of the speed limits are 50-55 mph, it wouldn't be a huge concern for me. I think if you plan on staying at 33", 4.56 is a tad much. If you offroad a lot, don't do a lot of highspeed highway, etc, it could be worth it.

Milage and fuel economy are things that are harder to talk about then what people realize. You will never get back to stock (same truck same driving style, you may be able to beat it on like one tank) fuel economy because you are turning bigger tires with more rolling resistance Gears will not change those facts.

-Gears will get you back into the stock powerband (if you have ever driven anything that is a 2 stroke or a old diesel you really know what a powerband is)
-If you dont know what you are doing dont attempt to install your own gears unless you have knowledgeable help with it I have done this and its not nearly as easy as i thought.
-Gears give the illusion of better fuel economy because your truck counts the rpm of the motor and the gear its in this gives you the mph and the odometer reading which you use to figure out the fuel economy, this is wrong once you change the gears or the tire size hence the speedometer is off so it thinks its going farther or not as far as it really is.

Gears are great they can make the truck drive more stock again or give even more torque then stock, also they can relieve stress off off the drivetrain and they can give you better fuel economy because of the oversize tires but don't think they are really going to pay for themselves. if Toyota could have made the truck get better fuel economy with different gears dont u think they would have done that from the factory?

Im not saying dont do the gears, just dont have unrealistic expectations when it comes to them. Good luck with what ever you do.

Dont think they will pay for themselves? If you are decreasing stress in all major components of your vehicle do you not think thats a great investment? Who wants to run 35's and blow transmission or engines because the loads are to great?

Two things can cause poor fuel economy:

At one end of the scale:
    1. Running engine at higher RPM than necessary on the highway, causing *slightly* increased internal friction and therefore lower MPGs. Solution: numerically lower gears.

At the other end of the scale:
    2. Engine not operating in optimum power band for what is required of it, causing user to have to press down harder on the gas pedal to get desired performance characteristics. Solution: numerically HIGHER gears!

#1 is why in the quest to beat the EPA estimates game, manufacturers run lower rear end diff ratios. It also leads to a quieter ride, which consumers definitely like.

#2 explains why, contrary to what you'd expect after reading #1, drivers who put on oversize tires can actually get a mileage INCREASE by regearing. The engine operates more optimally in the power band for what is asked of it, and so less gas is consumed.

I got better gas mileage in my F150 after regearing it from 3.31 to 4.10.

They won't pay for themselves purely out of increased fuel economy.
