Yes i fully agree with this, but you cant count on that the gears will save the transmission or motor so i didnt count this. and what if you do regear and then the transmission still goes out its just to unreliable for me to take into the calculations.

The RPM and transmission gear are used to calculate the speed and odometer in these trucks. In some the wheel speed sensor does this but its not in this truck, if it was when the front wheel bearing went out the speedo would go crazy. also if you hold the break and floor it (burnout) the speedometer goes up, so its in the drive train.

Again i still think the gears are worth it if you run a bigger tire then say a 33 even a very aggressive 33 would be worth it. again good luck with any choice.

Thanks! I had no idea our trucks use rpm and tranny gear to calc the odometer! And good point about it failing even with a regear! Ya all these little things make taking everything into account very difficult!

This is so true especially when the tire change is not that dramatic but any loss of power to me (im assuming all car people) feels huge. good luck with your decision and if you do it post up install pictures and before and after feel. (it will really help if you can drive something before and after a gear install i got to do this with a friends xj jeep he had 38 inch tires and we installed the gears in the rear i had driven it a lot before and after and it was really night and day oh yeah that xj was garbage. it would go anywhere i mean anywhere but it rode and drove like total crap unibody).

Gotta pay to play! I regeared and I love it! It all depends on your on perspective in the long run. I have a 34 inch tire with 4.56 gears and I wont ever regret regearing. IMO regearing is worth it.

As far as know, it is stock 5 speed stick 265-70 tires. 1st gear seems AWFULLY low to me- don't even need to give gas to get going-thought that was odd too. I expected that in 4low, as like my older truck, but not in 4hi. replacing tires soon and am very tempted raise body and get bigger tires. (On my 91 running 32's w/3"body lift. Of course that truck is a TANK.) Really don't do much interstate driving, just seems like I am changing gears too often. That is why I questioned 80mph at 3k rpm.

So all this being said what gear ratio should I go with?? I'm trusting you guys since y'all have more experience here. Like I said I have a 3.73 stock ratio so what do I upgrade too??

Back to your original post then... I doubt the unichip is doing you any favors.
If you want to get back a little mpg:
4.10s is as close to stock as you can get.
4.30s will be a little more agressive, and with the extra wheel-meat may show a alight improvement in fuel economy.
4.56s will be too much with a 32.75" tire.

While getting "lost" mpg back with gearing is a possibility and 'nice' it isn't the reason to spend the $$. They won't pay themselves off quickly (if ever) with money saved at the gas pump.

Based on what I've read from your posts, do not plan on doing the gear change yourself. Send the 3rds to a good shop (east coast gear supply, etc.) It is not an easy job...especially not for a novice wrencher or if you don't have a skilled friend handy.

    cheers

i havent done it yet, but i will be installing 4.10s in my truck. im running 285 nitto TGs. this will put me just slightly over stock.

i agree w/ the above, 4.56 will be too much for your tires, unless its strictly an offroad vehicle (which im guessing its not from your initial post).

I do have a skilled friend to help. Sounds like 4.10 is the winner. Money spend isn't a factor when it cones to my truck. I want it to run proper as far as powertrain is concerned. One question: what are 3rds and why should I send them to a shop?? Thanks

So after doing more research I've decided on 4.10 gears mostly nitro gear. All I should need is ring, pinion, and install kit with new bearings (I'm at 53k miles so I think I should change bearings while I'm in there) correct?? No more parts needed?? Also, what type of differential fluid do y'all recommend putting back in?? And I've also read somewhere that different gears won't fit in my 3.73 rear end without modification, tell me this isn't true.

Right away they will put dyno in and then you change it to whatever after 500 miles. just to allow the gears to "break in"

nitro gear makes 4.10s? i thought only OEM toyota has 4.10 gears?

all you need is the ring/pinion, and an install kit (basic or master). i use mobil 1, as do many others. also as long as you dont have hte elocker, those gears should fit. if you do have the elocker, you need the ring/pinion that fits the elocker.
