Removed my shifter today for a strange feeling and noticed this looks kinda cracked. But it’s also cast iron and could be from manufacturing. If this is not right please tell me!

Yeah I can only find pictures of second gens though and they appear to have no bottom. I am thinking that it should’ve been all knocked off in manufacturing

Definitely grease there as it needs it for the bushing to slide in the cup. Doesn’t feel rough on the sides of the cup but it’s a rough edge. I have looked at lots of linkages and I feel it shouldn’t be there at all should just be an open hole but I am unsure

SO this is the clearest photo I have seen from a second gen, havent seen one from a third. I believe it is Cast and then the center is supposed to be broken away but mine was only partially broken away. I am now having a hard time reinstalling the turning clip for the shifter itself, the 1/8th turn guy you have to remove to take the shifter out.

Do you see any metal chunks in the housing, from the picture I don't see any. There isn't really anywhere for stuff to go in the shifter housing. The shifter rod goes through a hole on the back of the tranny case. I don't remember what mine looked like. The bottom of the hole really isn't a concern though, the ball presses on the side to make shifts.

What was the weird feeling that you were feeling?

I was not able to see anything in there at all I have it all back together it’s driving fine. No noise shifts great. The feelings hard to describe but maybe like there was movement at the bottom of the shifter like at the shifter stub bushing. Don’t feel like I’m forcing anything but just felt like maybe loose but bushings great and the stub extender is tight as can be set screws haven’t moved at all

Here we go if anybody cares, got another third gen opened up and it’s just the same. It appears that portion is broken off from the cast in manufacturing and isn’t an issue. Toyota probably has a reason but seeing that Rough edge at first glance absolutely concerned me.

Just have to add, I can't believe the clearance you have to the front shifter bolts. Mine are underneath the floor at least an inch. If it was like yours I would have pulled mine out to compare.

First two pictures in my initial post are my truck, third photo of the open cavity is a second gen, man am I jealous of that. 4th pic for confirmation my truck is as designed is of a customers vehicle at my former job a local Toyota dealer. They opened one up for me because no one was certain and there aren’t good parts photos or anything.
