I didn't remove my bumper. It really wasn't all that bad to do. I also cut out the existing plastic grill.

I think it is a must to take the bumper cover off unless you are going to cut where the insert goes. I like to take stuff apart so it was not an issue, plus I didn't want to cut anything. I tossed the screws and clipnuts they sent with it and used stainless with rubber backed stainless washers. Should have painted them black I guess but it looks like it came stock with the truck. Main reason I did this was not cosmetic but due to flying debris. Saved me from things like chickens falling off trucks (those from NC and SC will appreciate a dead chicken flying at you when you are on I-85), A crow that was hungover, wood mulch from some stupid person who mulched the local road, etc. 14000 miles and the grille still looks new. The truck looks less new but I love it just as much as when I bought it last year.

So I would say take off the bumper but use caution putting it on, especially if it has been sitting in the sun. Harder to get back on than take off but overall is easy. Others that are far more skilled than I am have done differently.

    Good luck.
