The bolts are torx head that come with the kit.

Does anyone know if you tie down items you're carrying to the side rails or the cross members?

i'm building a roof rack, and the way it's situated, i have to use a standard bolt as i won't be able to get to it with a torx head.

you don't happen to know the size and thread do you? 12-24 fits, but is a little lose, and i'm worried if i use them, the rack will pull out if i ever catch it on a sumstantial branch wheeling.

and what you need to carry that will determine whether to keep the rails stowed and attach like that, or turn them into crossbars.
