Is there a for-sure way to wipe the "learned" AT settings? I see the OVTune thread talk about how after loading the tune it's better but they can't (without problems) stop the learning from creeping back in. But without a tune to load how can this be cleared?

I would think Toyota has some unlikely-to-be-guessed sequence for their Techs to do, like most all electronics these days, there's some button press or process to do hidden things.

Some people say disconnect the battery for about a half hour.

You need a windows laptop, install the "cracked" software that came on the CD (or download from net) info on tundrasolutions on all the install nuances. Plug laptop into truck, with cable, run the Toyota diagnostics software, Techstream. Its the same stuff the dealer uses. Lots of stuff to play with.

Ok, maybe it's easier than I thought. Hopefully there's a clear shit option. Thanks.

It's super easy, but can be a painful driver & software install. There is a large thread with everything you need to know on tundrasolutions, read that first and see if it's for you. Think I paid $15 from Amazon for the right cable, so not much of a loss if you giveup on it.

    Edit,
This is the one I use, but the CD had a bunch of unneeded shit on it, so I didn't trust the ccontents and downloaded the software from one of the links in the thread mentioned above

If you just want to dump all learned / adapted memory disconnect the negative battery cable and connect it to the positive cable for about 30 seconds. Yes this is a factory approved method.

Yes, by watching and asking the tech while I was there. Take the battery leads off and hold the Pos and Neg together for a minute

My only question is "why"? If you clear the learned behavior and the same driver gets behind the wheel, it will learn the same "bad" behaviors. Perhaps a driving class or two before you reset it and learn better driving techniques, it might work better. Just food for thought!!

Actually I have an answer for "why"...the system is learned by the driving of the individual. When I started driving it I was concerned about fuel mileage and was very light on the accelerator, like eggshells under the pedal. The tech told me driving it like that may have made the computer think I was a wuss and didn't get aggressive so when I would hammer down the accelerator didn't react accordingly. He reset and told me to drive aggressive to see if the computer learned differently. This relates to the "Oh Shit" thread where the truck stalls on aggressive acceleration...turns out it isn't a computer issue but truck issue but we were testing a theory.

    Lol

People have issues with the way it learns... regardless of who is behind the wheel. It "learns" to upshift too early and have you bogging down.

Resetting it lets it "inefficiently" rev higher and shift later.

Or perhaps I was going to tow a trailer for the weekend, and just maybe, I thought the truck would do better if it didn't think someone that needs driving lessons was behind the wheel. JFC...

Based on people's experiences, and even maybe mine to a certain extent, I think the term "learning" is a misnomer. Yeah, it's learning how you drive, realizes you're using more fuel and maybe more exhaust emissions, and so after a while it starts to compensate by upshifting early, holding the higher gears too long, etc. Biut it's not adapting the program to drive like you want it, in fact the opposite. I do try to drive for mpg a lot of the time, but find when I want the power, I can access it pretty easily. For example, I rarely accelerate hard off the line, but when I need to, it feels great ... none of the lag people complain about. OTOH, I do drive in the mountains a lot, forcing 5-4-3 downshifts and often using ECT and S3 and 4, and I think it doesn't like that so it's getting lazier in those conditions. Those are my not-so-scientific thoughts after over 37K miles, one trans TSB plus new CPS.

Adaptive learning has been around since the mid 1990,s . If you have driven any Chrysler vehicle with an automatic transmission from 1998 and up , you were operating a vehicle with a form of adaptive learning . Back in those days , the programming was more about keeping the driver happy and less concerning about fuel economy .
With this said , you could essentially train the transmission to shift more aggressive or to the way you liked it to function
With newer Tacoma,s , Toyota programs the adaptive learning to maintain fuel economy rather than concentrating on how each individual driver believes the transmission should feel .
Unfortunately , Toyota,s programming eventually reverts back even after a short term memory wipe creating drive ability issues for the person that has to operate the truck on a day to day basis
