This week I was late for work, so I started the truck and put it in reverse immediately without waiting for the truck to warm up, the lever (automatic transmission) felt hard and the shift came in forced and abrupt. If I wait for the car to warm up this doesn't happen.

Why do some people say that you shouldn't wait for the truck to heat up, that that's a thing of the past?

What happened to me is not normal?

If it is normal, does it not affect any component to continue doing this?

I think it’s normal because the idle rpm is also high when engine is cold

You know EVERY engine revs higher than idle when it starts, right?

So you put the gar in gear a split second after starting it, and it slammed into gear, and your confused by this?

I think there is a difference between immediately and not waiting.....

Unless it's extremely cold here, I will start the car and let it run for maybe 10-20 seconds before taking off slowly. I have never started the truck and immediately shoved it in reverse or drive.

Trans takes a sec to build pressures to shift smoothly. Idles also high with a cold start. Normal. Watch the tach next time you start the truck. You’ll see it revs a bit when it starts, and idles high to warm the engine/cats.

It was not imediatly , i mean , It doesn't seem strange to me that the shift is forced, but this forum is full of threads where people say that their car doesn't heat up and that it starts once they put the seat belt on.

I live in Florida and I always warm mine up at least 4 minutes but here's the thing... modern engines don't need a whole lot of warming up especially with 0W-20 synthetic oil. I've always been told it's the transmission fluid that's critical to warm up especially in the winter. You can damage a tranny a lot easier than the motor.

So, I going to follow doing the same thing , wait between 2 - 3 minutes before move the shift knob. I guess for a couple of times I won't have damaged anything.

    Thanks a lot!.

General guideline is to idle for about 30 sec for oil to circulate. Doesn't have to be 2-3 minutes.

Did you park on an incline without setting your e-brake? When I do that, shifting out of park is harder due to pressure on the park pawl. Just want to make sure that wasn't what you felt.
