This is the results of a Ford vs Ford truck collision. Yesterday. Why would both the rear axles fall off like they did? Is it part of the F-100's design?

Maybe Fords are like those Geccos whose tails fall off when distressed? :notsure:

but you would think that Ford would have a impact zone near the cab and bed in order to prevent such? I have never seen such. That is the reason for the post. nothing else. just to be educated.

It looks like a diagonal impact (sideswipe/t-bone) which would make the other truck just hook onto the rear wheel and ripping it out from underneath the truck. It has always amazed me that the rear axles are not attached to the truck with some kind of link (like some of the lifted trucks have). It is basically just held in place by leaf packs, which in itself was designed to flex, so it is not really a sturdy connection.
Sad about the other driver. This stuff happens so quick and affects a lot of people in the wink of an eye.

Not to take away from the terrible accident but the axel on a Tacoma is held on the same as a Ford.
    U bolts to leaf springs.
Would a Tacoma react the same in the same accident?
No way to tell unless it can be re created.

If you really and truly want to educate us (and maybe impress us in the process)....

Search Google for official CRASH TEST videos where you can compare the vehicles in real TEST results where the scenarios are exactly the same.

Those pictures do nothing for me - makes me say a prayer for the folks involved.

No seriously, was the other truck one? The pic looks like a 90s-model F-150?

well if you look. you will see the leaf springs are both broke. so that and the frive shaft are about the only thing holding it in place.
