I'm still wrestling with my 6.0. Plugged up EGR cooler and oil cooler led to catastrophic failure. Total top-end rebuild with new heads (both were cracked), ARP studs to replace the crap TTY bolts, Black Onyx head gaskets, EGR delete, cooling system filter, etc. and it's been running solid for the last 12k miles.

Only problem is that the oil cooler is plugging up again. The shiatty design combined with the silica-containing Ford Gold coolant (required or Ford wouldn't warranty the heads) will destroy the engine in under 30k miles.

I'll be flushing the system soon with an iron scale remover and then a cleaner to remove most of the build-up before swapping coolant to what that engine should have come with -- the extended life coolant recommended by International and used in the 6.0s that they deliver in their own trucks.

PITA engine that requires a lot of upgrades, but once they're done it should be good for several hundred thousand more miles.

my friend and I replaced a plugged egr valve on his 03 6.0. F-ing sucked. We ended up doing the EGR delete. He is gonna do the ARP studs later next month.

You could not give me a 6.0/6.4L. Not worth the massive hassles IMO. There's a reason why every diesel magazine I read talks about entire businesses dedicated to putting Cummins engines in every other fullsize domestic.

It's a nightmare. To do it right you either have to pull the engine or remove the cab from the frame. On my truck the cab came off.

It was an option I was considering, and the route I should have taken.

Yep we pulled the cab off. Took us about a 3 ( we started saturday ended monday night!) days to finish in his dads shop in helotes. Needless to say it was weird to me pulling the cab to do engine work, although it was what we were told to do in order to do the job right. I do remember his dad saying that the cummins was in the wrong truck.

Give me a Hilux-like Tacoma turbo diesel that is 100% compatible with biodiesel and I will be a happy camper. We get 500 miles to a tank in the 2500HD with it and it purrs like a kitten. I hate hybrids. They aren't good for someone like me who has to drive 20 miles on a rural road before I get into real stop and go traffic that hybrids love.

The thought of all of this really doesn't sit well with me, this is my first Toyota and been my best vehicle ever. My dads Nissan Titan is awesome, I will be getting one if this goes through.

Why? It's not as if Toyota is going to scrap everything they know and start fresh with Ford at the helm. You are taking the leading American and Japanese auto makers and combining their knowledge towards a new technology. I am a big time Toyota fan, it would take a long time of consistent reliability and quality for me to change from that, but that does mean they can't grow and learn together. Besides, this is on hybrid technologies, you don't have to buy a hybrid (yet).

I work for a construction company that always works in rural areas, so we are driving a lot of miles off-road every day.
Last year the higher ups in head office decided it was more in-line with our company values to switch from Dodge 2500 diesels to Ford escape Hybrids. It's been a disaster, these things aren't meant to hold up to this type of use.
Two people in the company (including me) said we'd pass and collect a monthly allowance to use our personal rigs instead.

My understanding is that there is awesome diesel technology that works well in Europe but is banned in the US. I just think the whole thing is bass-ackwards. A turbo diesel would be an awesome choice for a truck who's engine is underpowered anyways.

I grew up in Milwaukee,WI and now live in Sparks, NV. I have delt with snow for over half my life with out 4x4. In '05 we got six and a half feet of snow on this side of town and seven and a half feet on the other side of town over a two week period when it snowed every day. Chained up the PreTaco put some extra weight in back and away we went. What I love are the people that get a 4x4 to drive in the snow and think "I have 4wd I can do anything". They are the ones that go flying past you doing 70 when every one else is doing 45-50. Then a couple of miles down the road you see them flipped or in the ditch. I hade one almost take me out once. Right after he passed me I saw his rear end get squirly. I down shifted and slowed down watched him do a 540 about 30 feet in front of me before slidding off the road and rolling 2 1/2 times. We got our 4x4 mostly for playing in the dirt, sand and mountains.
