You could if you wanted to, but the backup route through Washington is just 5 miles down the road. Easy fix.

Last minute change of weekend plans... Was supposed to backpack Yosemite and Tioga Rd is opening tomorrow, but after talking with the wilderness ranger the trails for our permit will still be pretty snowed in and sketchy.

Looking for some stock friendly routes to possibly get out there this weekend. Afraid of things being really crowded through.... Would love a creek spot or lake.

Any suggestions in the Western Sierra (Plumas, Eldorado, Stanislaus) / Mendocino NF where we might be able to get away from the crowds for a couple of days that someone is willing to share? Or point me in the right direction to explore?

Running a DCLB 4x4 265/70r17 DuraTracs, sliders but only the flimsy stock sport skid so not looking for anything crazy, just want to get out in the woods and hopefully away from any major crowds.

The route I posted will get you up to the general space you were going to go. Will cause trail striping however. Plenty of dispersed camping to be found out there, so you should be able to find a quiet spot somewhere.

If you are interested PM me and ill send you the gps file link. Other think I can offer is check out the overland bound forums in the overland routes section, there are all sorts of options posted in that general area.

Yea it takes you up high and down low. One of the camp sites near a lake ( which didn't exist when I went, it was dry) is all burned up. Had to find a new place to camp out.

Hi guys! Found this thread today. My wife and I just moved up to Sacramento from Orange County. I have a dcsb stock other than some beefy tires. Haven't really tested the truck out much but am looking to go with some guys up here on weekends. Anyone know any areas around Georgetown? Also, can anyone recommend some good starter trails?

I think we are going to do Bowman soon and Usual Road up near Fort Bragg.

Thanks and I look forward to meeting you guys some day! Appreciate all the help this forum gives.

Not much, that I know of, in Georgetown area, except a designated OHV (Dirt bikes) area.
But if you keep going up Wentworth Springs road, it will get you pretty close the
the Rubicon trailhead, crawling with serious off-roaders on the weekends.
Except for the Rubicon, most other roads in the area are just easy dirt roads.

There's a couple of 'starter trails' south of highway 50 (take the Sly Park turnoff)

Plummer Ridge 4wd trail (between North/South rd and 9N22)
    http://4x4trailmaps.com/4x4Trails.php?Trail_ID=492

Baltic Ridge 4wd trail (between forest roads 10N46 and 9N30)
    https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/baltic-ridge-trail

Be sure to get forest maps before you go, or you can easily get lost.
Most of the roads up there were on my Garmin, but not all.

Of course, there is always Prairie City SVRA, near Folsom.

    its got kings bro
Around quintette there are lots of dirt roads to dick around on.
Also head down church street to canyon creek road in george town, it turns to dirt a few miles in. There are a decent amount of fire/powerline roads that you can take to dru barner.

Hwy 49 closed around Bootjack due to fire activity. Pretty much buttoned up but anybody traveling in the area be careful.

So... I was supposed to go do a portion of the Oregon Backcountry Discovery Trail with some guys from t4r.org July 5-8 (they were going to keep going until probably July 12). Last minute, the two organizers canceled because of the sudden death of a close friend.

The truck was already set up for camping. I decided, since I had done no trip planning for Oregon and had intended to follow those guys, that instead of going to Oregon and stumbling around cluelessly, I would stay in nor Cal and try and work my way down to some areas discussed in this thread. I had 3 days... my loose plan was to try and put together a dirt route from up here to Clear Lake and back (as was referenced some pages ago in this thread).

I headed out on some local forest roads in the Six Rivers and Shasta-Trinity NFs, worked my way south of Ruth, through Covelo, into the Mendocino NF, and was planning on camping at Lake Pilsbury to end day one; then head down to Clear Lake via dirt and fuck around there, then who knows what next.

Right around dusk on M-1 in the Mendo NF I got a flat tire. No idea what I ran over, I could feel the air leaking out of a spot in the raised section of tread but I'll be damned if I could see an actual hole. Anyway, I changed it, which was a slight ordeal because after I got the flat off but before I had placed the spare on, the jack (which was maxed out) sunk a little into the soil and I ended up having to dig a hole under where the front wheel would have been to get the spare on. I camped right there where I changed the tire, about 1/2 way between Covelo and Lake Pilsbury on M-1, because changing the tire put me past dark.

This morning I woke up and debated continuing on, but I have no plugs or onboard air; and having no spare, and a HT tire on the front, kind of gave me pause. I decided to pull the pin on the rest of the trip and will finish it up later. I came home via paved roads.

Still a good trip. Mendo NF is quite nice, tons of great dirt / gravel roads and no one on them. I believe, if my Googlery is accurate, that Mendo is the only NF in the country not traversed by a paved road. CA 162 turns to gravel and becomes NF-7 for 50 miles through the forest.

Even though the actual NF "Backcountry Discovery Routes" are technically defunct (thanks, tree hugging assholes who got a court injunction to block the NFS from keeping the routes marked as such in the 1990s) some of the signs can still be found.

Still sounded like a good trip. Nice pics too. And it gave me a good reminder to get a tire repair kit.

Yeah I'm ordering a Viair something or other and getting some plugs in the next day or two. I think a 300P should be adequate... but I'm still consulting the nerd gallery on that.

Very cool! bummer about the tricky mechanical. I have to say, an un-forseen benefit of rock sliders has been super easy jacking of the truck via hi-lift... so in addition to being a very useful tool for getting unstuck, it also is a jack that will always be tall enough!
