they shut most of them down for other reasons. no money to maintain, or to save some dumb frog. there is a ton of info on why they closed so many rds. that's why we need to protect the ones we have remaining. There is also a group that wants all forest roads closed to the public. because off roading isn't safe and it ruins the environment.

I agree. I do know after working with a retire forest service forester that they have to prioritize which roads they allocate money to. If they don't have the resources to maintain a road they'd rather shut it down. I'm sure they do account for public use. So even if it's an old logging road and people are recreating on it they'll push resources that way.

As far as the environmental stuff, who knows what bizarre rules they follow. Kinda like closing dear valley for a few years and then reopening it. I can't tell they did anything...

@jqueener that "hippy finds a read bellied toad" line had me rolling.i've run into that problem at work with not being able to pump water out of certain streams or lakes. all solid points as well. I've met my share of slobs and pricks out in the woods who simply won't "pack it in, pack it out"

So that means when I'm venturing for firewood when camping, and the loggers have the dirt road barricaded with trees, I'm not supposed to go over or around it making my own trail?

I'll chalk this thread up to my over eagerness and being new. You guys are all right, the way I found this website originally was by googling some other random Tacoma question back when I had my 98 a couple years ago. This place was a top result. Point made.
Perhaps to keep good places good, and good places quiet I'll send out the occasional PM for some trail advice when I need it.
But now you old salt dogs are going to be hearing from me. When the snow melts you'll hear from me. That is a direct threat.
In the mean time I'll pour over my Topo maps, drop pins and over pack for a weekend trip.

start following the nor cal wheeling and camping threads. there is like 4 or maybe more this yr. and the nor cal spotted and bs thread. Andy and a few others have a ton of knowledge when it comes to back country routes. me i just like to hit a few harder trails ever yr. all the trails that we played on when i was younger are now closed.or are paved roads, so i too like to find new ones. there is a pretty large group of great guys to wheel with in nor cal. don't be a lurker.

For sure. I've been posting here and there. Quite a bit for someone who's never been on a forum before but just like everyone says this place is a rabbit hole and I love it. I'll try and make it to a meet and greet, maybe even cash a couple of these Bay Area owners oussside.

Haha youre more than welcome. Got plenty more trails hidden around the forest hill/crystal basin area but we will keep them on the downlow.

this is one of my favorite sites. trails are rated. some may be closed , not sure how up to date they keep it.
maybe i can check out a few with you sometime. i have explored that area a few times. i need a few good spots to romp the quad also. im sure you might know a few.
