Yeah, that is a really long way around. I was hoping to get into that area this year (if they ever get allocation for my truck). On one hand that is probably a high priority to be fixed, but on the other hand, with all that barren land due to the Rim Fire, there is likely a huge amount of road to be fixed.

id imagine it be pretty similar to the vegas to reno route that best in the desert puts on. Race-dezert.com would a be a good spot to look.

Going to check this area out this weekend with some buddies. Since 1 is all fucked to hell with mud slides right now, the only access is through nacimiento-fergusson Rd as far as i can tell. anything else you recommend to check out?

Sweet. Report back on your thoughts. I hope it's still prestine, even with the damage that's happened around there. There several primitive camp sites tucked away in that valley. Camping on the ridge isn't your only option. The other spots are easy to find if you're willing to adventure around.

Last Sunday, I was driving around the forest, scouting for storm damage
    for the EDNF (Placerville district).

    I found this:

I was there 2 weekends ago and it was awesome. Beautiful views and far away from the crazies. Born and raised in Hawaii so this was a nice change of scenery for my wife and I. Weird to look out into the ocean and not see another island off in the distance. We got there early Friday afternoon, packed up and found another spot on Saturday morning, left on Sunday. We'll definitely be going back.

subd. I am new here, been lurking for a few months. My wife and I got a stock '15 TRD OR that we want to explore with this summer and this thread is great for inspiration and the tips are much appreciated. Would be great to meet up with some of you at some point- we are thinking our first trip will be in the Snow Mountain area in Mendocino NF in June.

I was just by Lake Leavitt near Susanville (36 and 395) yesterday on my motorcycle.

I saw the signs and recalled this thread and was like "hmm, I thought Lake Leavitt was near Sonora, when I looked it up after those TW guys were talking about it a while ago". I got mildly excited thinking I actually lived a lot closer to that place than I had first thought I did... and then I came home and jumped on here and searched... and there are apparently TWO Lake Leavitts in California. Seems... inconvenient.

And of course you guys were talking about the other one.

We call it leavitt lake not lake leavitt.

    Maybe that's the difference? :notsure:

Due to most of HW 1 along big sur being closed we only camped one night on the coast. was pretty awesome spot tho! I was planning on exploring the entire ridge but a stranded dual sport rider on a vstrom needed a tow back to HW 1.

Which way did you go to get to the ridge? Thinking about going down over memorial day weekend. That or Mendocino NF. But really want to go down there was hoping to get there from highway one though.....

Carrizo and soda lake is a cool spot. Was there a few weeks back during the super bloom and went back again the other weekend. Most every thing in the valley can be down in 2wd or even a Subaru.... I went up on the eastern ridge and found a few challenges.

Beautiful!! So glad people are taking advantage of this area. Whenever I stayed around here I laughed at the suckers down below cramped in their crappy campgrounds!
