NP: I will be doing my LC tranny this week (or next week) so I may take few pictures, it should be the same thing. My Taco tranny filter is scheduled for next year (too much on my TO DO list)

Have any of you actually seen or touched the filter with your own eyes and hands?

I have. And it is not a filter. It's a flat shaped pan with absolutely zero media of any type to filter with. Im not even sure why it is called a filter.

Take it out and run water through it. It is hollow.:p

The pan has a few magnets at the bottom where you will find very very fine metal "dust".

I did my first change at 67K miles. 37K of those boosted. Fluid was obviously dirty but still very red. Refilled with Amsoil ATF after I had my valve body upgraded by IPT.

You guys with stock power levels probably have squeeky clean trans inside:p

I would recommend just draining the 3 qts out of the pan and refilling 3 new qts maybe once every 6 months or maybe once a year. Doing a complete and total flush is most likely a waste of money. Unless you already have 150K+ miles and this is the first time.

SO, is there a filter OR NOT?

Nobody, even the pictures from the shop manual proved that there is actually a filter in there.

That black can supposed to have filter/mesh inside. They all look like it, some have more components some less. How much material you had on the bottom of the pan?

Well mine was completely hollow. It might as well not even be there. From what I can tell it does nothing:p

I had a small deposit of fine dust, maybe the size of a dime. The internals looks brand new inside. It was really clean to my surprise.

Here's the rest of the pictures...

That thing is called a Valve body oil strainer. Im guessing there is some mesh in it, but I havent seen one in person. The ones I have seen, have had a screen type material in them.

i'd do it at least every 50-150k depending on how often/heavy you tow. many toyota fuel filters are supposedly "lifetime" as well but aren't in reality.

if you think about it ALL trans fluids are lifetime fluids. when the trans dies, the fluid needs to be replaced. it lasted the lifetime of the trans regardless if it was the cause of it dying prematurely.

WS fluid supposed to be Synthethic, even if it is I can not imagine lasting beyond 100K in best case scenario.
Honestly, I dont think it retains its properties beyond 60K

Even Mobil 1 ATF needs refill with new oil between 40k - 60k And that is one good ATF.
Regular ATF needs change 20k - 30k depending on how you drive.
I am still going to do mine next year (probably around 50K mark) just to see how much material is collected on the bottom.

Thanks for the pics and the info! Was thinking about doing a 12 qt swap soon but will probably just do the 3 qt drain and refill that my dealer also does.

Thanks for posting those pic of your pan removed super werty. Also your findings of a small amount of shavings, fluid still red, filter:confused: possibly non serviceable, and the fact that your supercharged and run the hell out of it...saw your videos and their sick..., make me just want to do the 3qt drain and fill every so often and forget it.
I'm almost to 75K and have caught the "maintenence bug", wanting this pickup to last past 200K. It had 65k when I bought it, and the last owner didnt tow very often, if at all. Its hard to believe that trans oil will last this long, but if thats what they are sayin, no sence in wasting money for a dealer full flush. I wanted to do the drain and fill anyway, and I can manage this at home and save some bucks.

So why would the dealer offer to flush the transmission if it would just be detrimental to the tranny?

i helped change the fluid in my buddy's first gen, same thing, it's just a metal screen mesh, not really a filter but that is what they refer to it as. You really don't need to change the "trans filter" since it's just a mesh screen, but wipe down the metal magnets and reinstall with new fluid. Do you know is the amsoil fluid is compatable with the world fluid. I ask since i know the radiator fluid is not compatible with the green stuff with sulfates.
