I'm coming to you guys for some help. I had the 15,000 service today from the dealer.(2015 Tacoma TRD access cab V6) Got 1/4 mile from the dealer and the truck made a horrible sound and died at the stoplight. Busy road, so I started it and got off the road. Noticed the oil lamp on and thought, "this is a problem."

Since I was already late to work and I figured the damage was done. I decided to drive it back to the dealer and sure enough, they forgot to put oil in after the change. They were very apologetic and took the truck in to see if anything was broken. They just called, said they drained the oil and filtered it after running it for 2 hours and cut the oil filter in half to see if there were any shavings.

My question is, should they pull off the pan and check the crankshaft bearings? They want me to take it home and drive it for 250 miles and return to drain the oil and check for brass shavings. they have documented that this happened and will fix it if something is wrong. I'm wondering if there wasn't damage done that wouldn't be totally obvious from filtering the oil.

    Thank you in advance, Jared

Mods, if this in the wrong section please move.

    Damn.

They should do everything and not just what is easy.

    That's a huge fuck up.

    Yup, they fucked up royally.

Unfortunately it's an uphill battle for you to demand a new engine block. The very same thing happened to a member here with his 2nd gen, I don't recall the outcome.

Absolutely not only have them check the bearings, have them replace them. Even if they dont appear damaged, they were subjected to excessive wear in that time. The noise you heard cant be good.

New motor with full documentation and reimbursement for depreciated value (or make sure it doesnt go salvage title) or they take the truck back and pay you in full.

    Accept NOTHING ELSE

    I would be FUCKING LIVID

There is a reason why i hate dealership service centers and this perpetuates this.... They also almost forgot to put oil in mine when doing its first oil change at 5k ( i had done one personally at 2.5k) as i was there for a TSB on the rear leafs.... i just so happened to be standing under my truck showing the head service mechanic how to measure driveline angles (because surprise surprise he didnt know how to do the work). Oil change boy drained oil, put plug back in, truck was lowered and he went to move it off the lift. I yelled to high hell to DONT FUCKING START MY TRUCK YOU DUMBASS... needless to say this got EVERYONES attention, then proceeded to read him and his boss a riot act in front of everyone and they had no damn leg to stand on because whelp, it was all true. Just fail after fail.

Needless to say, the 25 bucks you save to get the free oil change is 1000% not worth it. Take your truck to a quality mechanic who knows what they are doing and has something to loose if he messes up. The job will be done right.

goddamn, I hate hearing stories like this. I always check the dipstick after getting a change because I've heard one too many of these. Sorry dude. No way I would ever trust my truck again after that unless they replaced the motor.

At the very least, they should offer you a lifetime powertrain warranty for this. Even if by some miracle the motor is still "good" by their standards, who knows what kind of problems might arise down the line. At the very least they should give you the warranty as a sign of good faith for such a big error on their part.

The 'techs' they assign oil changes to are not the same ones that would be doing a motor swap...

but yeah I see your point, either way it would be real hard to trust any work they do

A lube tech at the Chevy dealer I work at did the same thing to a Malibu a few years back. That car got a new engine on the house.

I never take my truck to those drive through oil places like Jiffy Lube because I'm afraid of something like this happening, really sucks when you have to worry about it happening at the freakin' dealership.

Don't accept anything less than a lifetime warranty on the entire truck

this is why I change my own oil. If I mess up my truck, I can live with it, if someone else messes up my truck, I couldn't

I usually do my own as I worry about it as well and just like to do it, but at least at Valvoline Oil Change places you can stay in your truck and they show you the dipstick so you can see the oil line before you leave and you can see them pour it in before they had YOU the keys to start or not start your truck.

Good luck OP, keep us updated
