Forward Pull When Using Clutch/Start/Cancel

Just an intermittent wiper switch upgrade. Came with power locks and windows, heated mirrors, but only hi/low/mist wiper settings. My ‘96 Tacoma LX had power nothing, but featured intermittent wipers. ‍♂️
For some time now, when either starting the engine or sitting at an idle, there's a slight force that pulls the vehicle forward. When starting the engine my truck actually lunges forward 1", if not 2". It never continues forward, and typically rolls back that 1" to 2".

    Let's exclude the obvious:
    • Yes, the transmission is in neutral when starting the engine
    • The clutch pedal is not depressed, hence using the Clutch/Start/Cancel
    • Fluid levels are and have always been great. Perhaps some loss in viscosity, but color is still "golden" more than it is "brown" - traditional BTW.
Now, while driving, there's a hum sound, like gears running under stress. I first thought it to be, and still think some part may be tire noise. I could swear that an ever so slight resistance surges in and out while I'm rolling down the road. Both shift levers get hot after a long drive, transfer case lever more so.
I suspect wear in the transmission and/or transfer case, but insight by more those with more experience is what I seek.

That's supposed to happen when using Clutch Start Cancel. From my understanding it's when you stall OffRoad and you need to be able to instantly start it and roll up, or you could roll back and fall off a cliff. Or when you stall on a steep hill on road and can't hit that person behind you.

Not sure about the gears though. I'm sure others will chime in.

    Welcome to TW.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I never looked up Toyota's purpose of the Clutch Start Cancel. I can, however attest to finding use for the feature that differs from what you described entirely. Never have I thought to use the Clutch Start Cancel to prevent from rolling backwards, and thinking on it now, I disagree. Preventing roll back is learned through the experience gained by driving clutch driven vehicles. Describing how I know best when on an incline, have both the clutch and brake pedals depressed firmly. Then quickly moving off the brake to the accelerator while releasing the clutch synchronous to RPM, I can accel with total confidence.

My situation is complicated...difficult to explain. To put it in as few words possible... With the clutch engaged and the transmission in neutral, a small amount of power is still being transferred to my wheels. I know little about the anatomy of transmissions, but the troubleshooting that I've done, most being observation, I'm thinking worn bearings/synchros/clutch components. My Tacoma is just shy of 300,000. I need an individual who posses vast knowledge of transmissions... or perhaps a certain someone that just so happens to have experience from one incident that is reflective of mine.

If the OP is in Neutral with the engine running and the truck wants to lurch forward , he is feeling the drag from rotating parts within the transmission . He could try a lighter grade of fluid or be certain he has the correct fluid in the transmission to start.
This is not an uncommon issue . It occurs in all brands of vehicles

    Emergency brake not applied ??

I get this sometimes in real cold temperatures if I don`t have the Emergency Brake applied with that applied no movement.

I dont think its supposed to do that...sounds like something internal is binding in the manual transmission. Ive started mine numerous times with the clutch start cancel button and it doesnt move at all in neutral and no parking brake on. It really shouldnt move

I think it is more from the Transfer case then the transmission.

200,000 miles plus and nothing has broke on my truck that does it

i think theres something wrong in your transmission. if your in neutral and/or your pedal is depressed, there should be absolutely NOTHING that would make your truck move forward or backwards.

im thinking one of the shift shafts is out of adjustment and a synchro gear is constantly being pressed onto one of the gear cones.

check this out. when i was delivering auto parts, i drove 1st gen standard tacos. i would sometimes get bored at a light and press the stick into first gear without pressing the clutch pedal, but i wouldn't press hard. I knew that it would push the synchro onto the gear cone but wouldn't actually engage the gear. i did this once without pressing on the brakes and the truck began creeping forward. the synchro gear was actually trying to synchronize the input and output shafts!

i think your 1st/2nd shift shaft is slightly out of adjustment and is constantly pressing a synchro onto a gear cone.

see video for detailed explanation. the guy uses a manual tranny off a 91ish toyota pickup. not much different from what you have.

Using the clutch start cancel is for when you need the torque of the starter motor to move you. Like when you're stalled on an uphill and need to get moving but keep stalling out the engine. Kind of silly being this used to be one of those learned driving skills of balancing the 3 pedals between 2 feet. It is outlined in the user's manual that you can download from Toyota.

Anyways, if you're feeling the vehicle lurch when in neutral, something is amiss in the transmission itself. I shorted out my clutch cancel and never had an issue like you're describing.

Yeah, I started driving before that safety "feature" was added. Was always and still am used to checking the gear stick is in neutral before starting.

Just an intermittent wiper switch upgrade. Came with power locks and windows, heated mirrors, but only hi/low/mist wiper settings. My ‘96 Tacoma LX had power nothing, but featured intermittent wipers. ‍♂️
Tons of great feedback! And a new found knowledge about the Clutch Start Cancel button, I'll take y'alls word, I was mistaken. So yeah, once idling and still in neutral, I can depress and then release the clutch lever and get a slight lunge forward then too. So my next question is, what can I do to my transmission? And I suppose my transfer case too, as it gets hotter than the transmission. Like I said, approaching 300,000, so I'm not surprised at all that they're both tired and worn. Amazon.com listed a transmission rebuild kit for about $250. Is that a viable option for me that would be effective in extending the life of my transmission?

Been driving stick for 30 years. Only time I needed to start in gear without the clutch was when my buddy stalled my truck in deep water and could not restart it. Used the starter motor to drive the truck out of water, let water drain from tailpipe, and it started right up. Not sure what I would have done if that had been an automatic.

change the gear oil or get it looked at by a tranny specialist, thatis it :\ unless you have a 20 ton press available and a machine shop, don't do anything to your tranny.

I use the clutch bypass pretty often, let's me start the truck without having to be in it or get in and out if i want the truck to warm up while i do something else. I installed a bypass in my f250, that thing had a mofo of a clutch and it just about wants you to less the pedal through the floor before it will crank.
