OK, that made me cry a bit! I have always had rescue dogs. The one I have now has a special place. He just loves everyone and everything. Listens great and always comes when called. I know this is from the love that we have always showed him. If your dog doesn't listen to you, then you are probably not giving it enough attention.

    Update, no calls today.

    He has relaxed some.

Buying him another toy when I pick up the wifey.

Still no signs of anger, my friend came over walked right in and he went up to him and started wagging his tail.

not unless it's matted, but brushing him will help remove the extra hair. plus it helps you two bond. not to mention when his winter coat begins to shed you will be happy that he learned to sit and wait. we had a husky growing up and she hated to be brushed. ever spring and fall our house looked like the inside of a pillow stuffing factory. maybe that's why all my dogs have short hair and single coats...

this thread makes me miss my three dogs at home, 2 of which are rescues.

Ok gotcha still learning about these dogs.

Did some research they look like they are good loyal dogs.

However I already knew he was loyal considering he goes everywhere with me.

yeah they are great dogs, worst part about them is that they will beat you with their tails.

oh and get Red in the habit of being brushed a few times a week.

a huge thing about active dogs is that they love routine, well all dogs love routine... but the active ones seem to need it. my doberman whines if her routine is changed ever so slightly. oh and goldens love to eat so i wouldn't free feed him or he could get over weight.

that's all on the advise, just love dogs and am always glad when one gets a better home then the one they came from.

Good Im going to get him into the habit of running in the morning it'll get my lazy ass in gear.

I just brushed him (had a dog brush handy) he sat while I did it I was proud.

I think he just loves the fact someone is loving on him.

Edit I have also decided the reason God gave dogs tails......

To wave there farts around haha

Funny how a dog makes big strong men into little kids again. That is no way a knock against anyone on this forum. I was glad to see you found no chip. Just give him a good home and you have done a good thing. I have had dogs all my life and always will. I think you are doing a good thing here.

The uproar when you leave is called “separation anxiety”. It is pretty common. Look it up, there are ways to help your pup cope and get past it.

As for food, remember, you are what you eat!! Be sure to get the best you can afford. Look at the ingredients. If any of the 1st 5 are grains, meal or bone meal, meat by-products, meat by-product meal, chicken by-product meal, pass it by.

Chicken by-product meal can be ground up beaks, legs, even feathers and poop. These are protein by definition, but your dog can’t digest it. Stick with foods that start with chicken, turkey, beef, ham, or fish in the 1st five ingredients. Vegetables are OK too, but stay away from potatoes.

The thing to remember is that these companies are in the business to make money and will use what ever they can to meet the “arbitrary” minimum requirements. I love the adds by Purina when they talk about “healthy” grains. You are feeding a dog, not a pig (although, mine eats like one ;) ).

On a completely different topic, how did you add the "fuelly" tag at the bottom of your post?

When I was a kid we had a golden. My folks have another one now. They are some of the best, most laid-back dogs and they're great with kids. The worst they'll do is get over-exuberant and that tail will knock things off of tables. ;)

I had a coworker once with 2 goldens. She actually did get them shaved in the summertime and they really seemed to like it. Also cut down on little skin issues goldens can develop in summer (little areas of infection that itch, called "hot spots"). If Red ever has that problem you may consider shaving him in the summer.

FYI There are some dog toys - the brand is Kong - and you can put treats in them. The treats don't come out easily, and it'll keep your dog occupied for a good long while trying to get them out. Greenies make for good treats, but remember - they come out the other end green too, so don't freak out. :D
Goldens also love tug of war. Get a toy with a good sturdy rope he can tug, and you'll have a game any time you pick it up!

x2 the BF and I feed all 5 of our dogs Orijen. It is grain free, and all of our dogs love it but it is super expensive...$85 for a 29.7lb bag.
