We feed our dawg Nature's variety "Instinct". It's grain free and costs about $60 for a ~27 pound bag. Because it is much higher in bio available nutrients, you can feed your dog much less, so the more expensive bag lasts longer. You'd have to see how the cost works out for your pooch. When we had 2 dogs eating it was only about 15% more expensive to give the better food.

I actually ended up making food for my dog who passed away in October. She had so many issues, it was the best way for her to thrive. She made it 2 years longer than she would have, but it was a commitment. I would spend 1 day each weekend making enough food to last the next week. But, man, she was worth it. She was the best dog I have ever know. She was far better than many people I know.

For anyone out there who is into reading, there is a great book on natural health for pets. I's called "Dr. Pitcairn's complete guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats". Great stuff in there. My girl put on 10 pounds of muscle to offset her bad hips. I got her off the nasty and dangerous carprofan. That got her through the last 2 years before liver cancer took her from us.

Ok he is on Purina Dog Chow for now because thats what all are dogs eat.

    He has EXTREMELY bad gas!!!!

I have taken him out a lot thinking he needs to poop but no go.

Im guessing he will have to adjust to this new food and then again if I switch it to something better if this isn't good enough?

FYI.. my dog Bailey eats Purina "Fit & Trim" and loves it. She is young too, and the vet said it would help keep a healthy weight. About $25 for a 50 lb bag at Costco / Sams Club

BTW... here's a pic of my dog, Bailey. Beagle / Rottie mix :)

Mine have been on Purina since we got them. They are on Senior now and they are maintaining a healthy weight.
We also supplement with Glucosamine biscuits to help their joints. It seems to be working. My two mutts are 10 years old estimated

Our lab / boxer mix was on Purina one when we got her and she always had a lot of gas and was too thin. We now have her on California Natural (get it at the local pet food store). It's about $40 for a 30 lb bag which isn't far off from what we paid for the Purina. Since, she has gained 13 lbs and looks a lot healthier (you could see all her ribs when we got her). Also less gas.

nice find. a while ago i found a chocolate lab about 3 miles back in the woods that was skinny as a string bean and had hundreds of ticks on him. my guess is someone bought him then realized they couldnt afford it so drove down to national forest and threw him out of the bed. he had a pretty mean limp to one side. but he just followed me around all day squirrel huntin so i threw him in the cab and took him home. it wasnt practical for me to keep him but dad had a friend at the fire department that was lookin for a new duck dog so i gave it to him. now the dog is fat happy and gets to chase around ducks for a living. Had I not been in college I would have kept it. Practically fell in love in the 3 days I had him. Called him sneak after how he kinda snuck around behind me for a while until he realized i wasnt goin to hurt him.

feeding your dog name brand dog food like purina, science diet, etc.. is like you eating McDonald's every meal of every day, for your entire life. find a dog food like Blue Buffalo or another which the main ingredients are REAL MEAT, FRUIT, ETC... may cost a bit more but will keep you dog healthy and alive longer. This will also help on the horrible gas problem.

Another update prob be the last one for this thread and Ill let it die.

No claims yet so getting him chipped on monday!

I got him some more toys haha jesh (enough toys for now) he decided to chew on a package (box) instead of his toys when I went on a run this morning lol

He is doing good I got him better dog food giving him 2 cups in the morning 3 cups at lunch 2 in evening however he is not eating his noon lunch so it might be to much.

He has still not had any accidents in the house he did how ever tear down my blinds looking out the window (no biggy didnt like them anyway) replaced them with a cloth material that he can easily stick his head around.

The one flaw I have figured out is my cat, I dont know if he likes him or not and if they can't get a long then Im not sure what I'll do.

Last night I caught buddy cornering my cat, it wasn't aggressive but it didn't make me very happy because my cat was freaking out.

Then today when I put buddy's food out my cat walked near him and he started growling and I said there will be none of that and smacked him on the nose (not to hard I dont smack dogs in the rear because it could cause hip problems).

So I waited till he started eating I walked by and slowly put my hand near his food he was completely fine with me so dont really know.

Like as im typing this my cat just walked by him and he did not mind at all......? Kinda weird.....

But he is doing good as long as he doesn't full on attack my cat or my other dogs (parents dogs) then looks like he has a new home!

Sometimes he acts depressed lol, then I throw his ball and he's like OMG OMG OMG BALL!!!!!

Anyway just wanted to say thanks to everyone that gave me their advice and info!

Starting in the next few weeks we're going to start running, half mile at first then up to a mile then 2 miles and I'll hold at 2 miles.

That will do a few things

    A) Make me get up at a certain time in the am.
    B) Use up his energy
    C) Get me into good shape.

buddy doesn't speak cat and the cat does not speak dog. i would say that buddy is still a puppy and wanting to play with the cat. as far as growling when the cat came near during food time, buddy was just saying this is mine and not yours. as long as he has no problem with you taking the food then he should be fine. make sure your cat has a place up and away from buddy, everybody needs their own person place to relax. just make sure that you set the rules for buddy on how he treats the cat. he is looking to you for guidance. if you don't set the rules he will...
