whats up everyone I've got a deal lined up right now for a 1st gen 02', V6, 4wd, SR5, 155k, for 9k.. to top it off its from a yota dealership and come with a safety inspection.

I'm curious to see if anyone has recommendations for getting the biggest bang for my buck since it's with a stealership. I've only ever dealt with private sellers so I'm new to this world. I've heard some dreaded stories of people getting haggled out of their money that they could've have easily kept had they known and negotiated a better deal.

PS I'm aware this is already a really great deal but I might as well squeeze as much as I can out of these suckers!

Don't squeeze too much $$ or wait too long or else someone else will be in line ahead of you and pulled the trigger on it.

Not sure how screaming the deal is, you know you're prices in your area better than me, seems high priced to me but when I looked up the value, assuming all is original with zero accident repair performed, their price might be a little high. I used zip code 90210 because of you guys' crazy Tacoma pricingScreenshot_20191025-174648.jpg

If it’s not super rusted out and has been well maintained grab it.

right on thanks for the advice everyone. It's about a hour away from me in northern Nevada. They're currently doing their standard Toyota safety inspection on it and he mentioned a year of free maintenance with it (going to get a breakdown ahead of buying it). it's a one owner. forgot to mention it includes a camper nice shell and it is a stick. I'm definitely going to double check when I have eyes on it, but I asked on the phone if they take junk cars (rusted, damaged frames, etc.) and he assured me, they don't throughout the entire company. I'm in near Tahoe, CA where people seem to mark up any 4x4 taco 10-20% of kbb value. kbb is obsolete for these trucks, at least in my area. the truck was listed and I called about 12 hours later early AM. seems I lucked out but I'll see for sure when I go to pick it up. I have deposit on it right now so I have it locked in.

Thanks man. I knew it was a good deal so I went ahead and put a refundable deposit on it to lock it down. My buddy just snagged the same one only try and 4 door, with 20k more miles on it for 12.5k so I'm feeling good about it.

People who routinely overpay believe databases of sold data are obsolete.

Nada doesn't assign value. It reports average actual sales as does kbb. If 1 vehicle sells at $10 and its the only reported sale it's going to report $10. 2nd sells for $20, it will show $15. If 100 all sell for $10, it shows $10. That doesn't mean that 1 won't sell for drastically more, just that a vast majority of people paid drastically less. The reason banks only loan on nada and kbb numbers is because they understand risk in investment. In anticipation of you failing on your loan they know that they will likely only be able to recoup a percentage of what they invested. They can't expect that they will find some sucker that will pay 3x more to them than everyone else is paying for identical vehicles. If you literally find your dream car, and to you its worth more than the bank will lend you can still buy it. You'll just need cash to cover the difference. Unless it's truly unique though, you're make a bad investment. Tacos are not unique. At all.

When we get appraisals and bpo/cma on real estate, same thing. In x neighborhood y property is statistically worth z. It's math and statistics. That doesn't mean that Jeff won't pay 50k more than appraised value, and you can list 50k high and hope for a jeff, but odds are you're going to be waiting a looooong time. So let's not market to jeff and Jeff alone.

If x vehicle actually sold at twice book, book value would actually show a number twice as high. But it doesn't because they on average, dont. Appreciation is what it is so values should change over time. Buying a little over in anticipation is fine, buying a lot over is blind hope. Financially it does me no good to buy at tomorrow's numbers today.

It's funny to me that people will look at the exact information they're looking for collected over thousands of sales, and the ignore it and go find 5 people and ask them the exact same question. If you go to literally EVERY car forum you see the exact same statements. Our favorite vehicle is worth way more than book and you should pay way more because of it. Not me though, I got mine at a screaming deal, because I'm an excellent negotiator. I only paid book... (congrats, you're statistically average).

Tldr, nada and kbb are correct in what they do, but people often don't understand WHAT they actually do. Instead of asking 10 people who haven't bought any vehicle at all in the last 5 years, you're asking 1000 people who bought your exact same vehicle in the last 12 months. 1 is a more viable tool than the other.

In almost EVERY case, a vehicle is a BAD investment. You just try to minimize your losses as much as you can.

Update..It was too good to pass up. I ended up grabbing it from the dealership on Monday. They replaced all drive belts, AT tires, fluids, and all brakes. Comes with three included oil changes. she’s driving like new!

A-freaking-men. I have a hard time understanding what is difficult to grasp for folks about this? Unless it truly is folks just loving their vehicle and want to feel okay about over spending on it. At that point, just suck it up and have fun with it. Learn a lesson, maybe the lesson is, 'Man the first gen Tacoma of my dreams is okay for ME to spend higher than normal because I love this thing' or a different buyer will say 'Yeah I over spent and the taco is sweet but not sweet enough to over pay xx amount.'
It's really just making decisions in a responsible way. Any bigger type of purchase should be handled that way. I'm turning into grandpa and pops...:rofl:

I got my 5 lug from the dealership about 9-10k out the door with 94k miles. Most people here will say I overpaid, but everything is subjective. Carfax showed owner had it serviced at Toyota dealership every 2k miles, great condition, not a speck of rust on the frame, and I had lost my prior truck to people stealing it and burning it down. I needed a ride to be at work by the following Monday and I nabbed mine after the first test drive with no hiccups. Safe to say since my purchase in January I have put 19k miles on it, and the damn thing has not let me down once. * knock on wood * Had my dodge ram prior to the taco for 8 years and I am hoping to keep the 5 lug longer. Glad to see you went with your gut and you're happy, enjoy the truck and make memories with it. I know I have haha

Agree, life is too short to care whether other people think you overpaid. I love that you love your taco hermano

Honestly, no one can really "over pay" for something unless there is some shady business going on (lying about service records or whatever).

When selling something, it's "worth" what someone else is willing to pay for it. When buying, it's worth what YOU are willing to pay for it.

What someone else in another part of the country thought a different truck was worth to them (based on what they were willing/able to pay for it) has no bearing on what this truck is worth to you.
