I agree, each scenario is individual and I don't care to pass judgement on value as that is a personal matter. We can compare to many others but it's kind of a waste of time. Just hope owner is happy with the Tacoma.

I've certainly chimed in with a "that seems a bit high" in some of those "is this a good deal?" threads, but that's just based on what people seem to be paying, on average.

There was that 1st gen a while back that sold for (apparently) ~$20k. My wife would divorce me if I paid that much for a 20 year old truck (and rightly so, lol) but that seems to have been worth it to someone... Probably either someone who's an investment banker and heard about these cool trucks and told his assistant to just go get one no expense spared, or this was a guy trying to get back granddaddy's truck or something.

If you got it for 9K out the door then that was a good deal in my opinion.

People who buy private party sometimes list the price paid for a lot less than what they bought it for also to save on taxes.

I have made plenty comments as well! I'd never spend what some do, but I wouldn't discount that purchase or your experience with it. If you love it and are happy with your purchase, don't let douches like me rain on your parade.:D If I do it's never intentional to rip anyone down, if anything it's to learn and do things better next time as we go.

That does sound pretty cheap coming from a Toyota dealership in CA...they usually mark up low mileage 1st gens like crazy due to their popularity here. Since it's within the normal asking price I'd jump on it, considering everything else about it checks out

I see you're in Lake Tahoe...if the truck is also from Lake Tahoe check carefully for rust. They don't use salt up there but they use another chemical that likes to rust frames despite what they say about it. When I was up there I was talking to a mechanic with a 3rd gen 4runner that had a Swiss cheese looking frame, he said it was from too many winters up in Tahoe.

Thanks all. Yea I’m stoked for the price I got considering the comparable Tacoma’s in my area. It’s a big 4wd area since I’m next door to Nevada and Tahoe wilderness. If it’s worth it to me I feel good about it. I know the resell value is always a safe bet as long as I don’t screw it up lol. Thanks for the good wishes folks!

While this is all very true....sometimes a "good deal" is as much a state of mind as it is numbers and logic. In the majority of cases it's impossible to completely eliminate the emotional component.

I found this "holy grail" of shortwave communications receivers back in '88 and paid $40 for it then. Still own it and run it weekly.

Joe Walsh of the Eagles bought his about 15 years ago for $10,000. Wrecked, non-running ones go for $5000 because of their rarity. There ya go on your point.

Cool story. In most other places around the country, $9k is pretty normal for a 4x4, especially low mileage and good condition.

i am curious about those places around the country where good condition 1st gens are relatively non-existent (or do not show up in the 4 sale ads regularly), how do you know what a normal price would be for one of those survivors

Most of it is seeing local adds, and lurking around here for almost a decade and seeing what people generally end up paying.

If you go to one of the places where road chemicals give trucks cancer, and then you find a completely rust free truck with moderate to low miles, I'm willing to bet it'll fetch $10k *easily*.

Prerunners are usually 2-3k-ish less than a good 4x4, especially the doublecabs, and then the 5-lugs are going to be like half what a 4x4 goes for.

So we are a good influence on folks here? We get folks to take care of their Tacomas AND help keep the economy stimulated?

Living in Tahoe I clean my trucks frames alot. They can rust up here (l not like the east coast no salt air) little maintenance goes a long way. I just repainted my 97 frame when I swapped in the 4x4 frame.
