I started a video recording on my phone and placed it on the driver's side floor of the cab. Then I got underneath and started moving the assembly (above) on the inboard side of the CV axle. You may have to turn it up to hear it, but the clunk is there and it sounds like what I hear when I'm driving.

The clunk is more audible starting around 0:20...

Here's what it looks/sounds like from the outside, underneath. Again, this is the driver's side. The passenger side doesn't have this much play.

Now the hard part. How to fix this? Nothing is leaking, so I don't think it's necessarily a "bad" part...but maybe just a bad design? The ECGS bushing is supposed to fix this extra play, so that may be my next move here. Some of you (I know @Unchained 5150) have the ECGS bushing installed and are still getting the clunk. Can you see if your CV has this much play?

I get a LITTLE bit on the passenger side, but it doesn't move enough to make noise. As you can see in the second video I posted, it's really squirrelly on the driver side.

Cold as a Mother Fucker here right now, but I will check this out. I did have the ECGS bushing done, but what would cause this slack?

Haha, it's 65* and sunny here. I'm actually smoking a pork shoulder out in the backyard.

I'm not sure what would cause the slack other than the needle bearing and clamshell design. That's why I'm curious what a post ECGS bushing CV moves like. It's almost like it's missing the retention clip on the inside of the splined end of the CV axle, and the only thing keeping it in the diff is the fact that there's not enough room for it to slide all the way out (doubtful, but scary).

Mine moves but not as much as that, and if that is all it is I am not worried about it. My neighbor just brought home a Brand New 2015 Limited 4X4 Tomorrow I will ask if he will let me crawl underneath and see if his moves. I mean I really had to apply pressure and tug on mine to move

Well, you saw how easily mine moves. And not just inboard/outboard but up and down as well. If this really is what's causing the clunk, I'm surprised I don't hear it more often.

I will check later on the passenger side, gotta go to the young ones Pinewood Derby now. But that little play I do not think will cause any harm just annoyance.

Unfortunately annoyance is my problem. Oh well, at least it's not harmful if this is it. I wonder if I can find an o-ring that'll fit just as a test to see if it's really the cause.

    Pinewood Derby...fun!

O Ring meaning you would have to take out the axle again? Yeah no skills on that end for me I would have to pay someone to do it. Maybe if somebody else in this thread hasn't lifted or done the ECGS bushing can go out and crawl under there truck and see if they have movement

I haven't lift my 2013 dclb yet. I just checked and it is pretty tight. Just a very little movement but not that much at all. I am actually wondering if your 35mm nut attaching the cv to your hub is loose?

I wondered the same thing. Guess it wouldn't be too hard to pull the dust cover off and take a look. At least our CVs have a castle nut and cotter pin holding the axle nut on.

See mind probably moved as much as the non lifted truck. I don't think that's my issue

I do guess that are CV joints would need a little bit of play due to the suspension moving up and down and the cv joint itself is technically a straight piece with no play in it. It does have the two universal joints on them but those don't move back and forth. The play that you have the seems a little excessive.

I had the play in my 2010, just like the video. I also had a vibration at 25 up to 45 mph. When shifting to 4wd, the vibe goes away. So, here it is. I installed the ecgs bushing and almost all the up and down play went away. The vibration is gone too. There is a thread on this with ecgs video, very good info. I also ordered Toyota needle bearing just to see if it has new dimensions. Well, the new bearing is actually smaller inside diameter that the old one. So...long story short, i have the new needle bearing but will probably never install It. The ecgs bushing is the way to go imo. I spoke with a tech guy at ecgs and he said they have a test truck with over 200 k miles on the bushing with zero issues. Note, mine did not clunk. I don't think your clunk is that play either. The axle just doesn't see that kind of loading while driving. Check out the official vibration thread and it should help. Good luck.

I have the front diff vibe and definitely need the ECGS bushing.

I did it myself, wasn't too difficult the official diff vibe thread spells it all out. Worth doing for sure. Just be sure that the seal wheretheaxle enters the diff isn't leaking. If it isn't, you can wait to do it.

Holy crap. That's ALOT of play on your axle. Check your castle nut for sure. It appears as if you the entire axle is allowing lateral play and that nut not being tightened would definitely be one of the main reasons as to why it may be doing that.

If only the inner option of the axle is moving, you need not worry about the axle nut. First off, it cotter keyed, and secondly, the axle extends and contracts to allow for suspension movement.

@Unchained 5150 is a weather wuss. I called him out on the same thing in another thread.

I'll do it again here, just to get him all fired up and warmed up. LOL.

I think we're both in the NorthEast. One of these days we're going to meet up and he's gonna kick my ass. LOL.
