34,000 miles on my 2016 3.5. This is the first time I have done the oil as I just bought it a couple of months ago. Oil looked reasonably clean, but notices when cleaning the pan and plug off, a fair amount of gritty metal on my rag and fingers. Im not used to seeing that in an oil change.
I had a brand new magnetic oil plug stored away and I installed it so I will n\see next time how much metal has accumulated on it.
This was unsettling to be sure

I dont think anyone liked this post, made all of you worried now about your own rig.
I wonder if this is normal for the 3.5 since its so space aged new and revolutionary, just uses up more steel to operate :)

Well, you offered no real info other than gritty metal. No pics, no description of appearance, nothing really to discuss. I am not worried about mine at all.

At 34,000 you're still breaking the engine in. I would say wait until 60,000 and check the content of the oil again. The metal you were seeing was probably left over from the extrusion process when the engine was built.

I never feel right to post a "Like" when someone finds something that is wrong with their truck, just seems wrong to me. Just like in the threads I visit most if someone posted that a friend, family member, or pet has pasted away, certainly don't "Like" that. Good luck with you truck !

Your basic warranty is until 36000.

Check it again before that and if you find metal take it to your dealer to get it documented.

Maybe even send off for an oil analysis.

Since you bought it used there's no telling how it was maintained by the PO unless they had it dealer serviced and all records are online.

Also note the oil level of your dipstick and watch for oil consumption.

Drain plug? Everyone here that changes their own oil, probably has a Fumoto valve anyway; myself included.

What did the oil filter look like?
    Thought about oil analysis?

Send an oil sample to Blackstone and report the results. If the report is bad, then we worry. Don't take this wrong but right now you are just a guy on the internet with nothing but words. Post up a Blackstone Labs analysis! Good luck man.

That's what is going to tell you the real story. Google them, they will send you a kit and instructions, send the sample back and they will send you a very detailed analysis. Good luck and report back please.

EDIT someone else mentioned them, ignore.

If you are that worried, run the oil a few K and send a sample off to Blackstonelap, you'll be amazed at what they can tell you.

34k and still finding moderate amounts of metal would make me nervous. Hopefully it’s nothing

16K on mine. I've done 2 oil changes. Small flakes in the oil filter housing on the first change as expected. Near nothing at 15K. Shouldn't be any metal flakes to speak of after the first oil change. Any particles of metal should be too small to see with the naked eye.

These use canister filters, no? If you still have the old filter cut it and spread it out. Take a picture and throw it up.
