Life love regret is a classic, pretty happy to know rob moran and being able to pester him about unbroken and suede and not bum him out. Wish I could say the same for Justin Pearson.

So you're saying the internals of an engine that are lubricated will not wear?

You sound like some engineers I know, sounds brilliant but your "in theory" never actually seems to work in the real world.

anyone would care if doing an oil change and you found enough metal on the drain and on your rag to feel between your fingers and see on the rag bud

The tight tolerances in the ford 6.7 diesels will not allow 15W-40 to run effectively in the engine, we had a customer that trashed a brand new F-250 because he did the first oil change himself and used the same oil he ran in his 7.3 diesel and diesel equipment (15W-40) instead of the 10W-30 that ford says to use.

Yeah, that would concern me too.

Hopefully you get some satisfaction from the dealer.

I don't think he's saying they'll never wear, but that properly lubricated the crank, rods, rings, walls and valve train should wear very slowly compared to your water pump, alternator, etc.

This is an accurate statement, even mass produced engines have such little variance and consistent tolerances that they don't wear out very quickly unless there's an issue. You should expect a short block to last the normal life of a car these days and metal in the oil at 39K doesn't seem normal to me.

haven't checked mine since last oil change. but had my first one at 3000km, then agian at 8000km then again at 16000km. At 16k still had a little metal flakes, dealer said its normal. the engine will have that up until the first 20k km usually.

    you're at 30 000miles which is a little concerning.

I don't see how this can be normal. Does Toyota recommend the oil filter change interval and is replaced at the same time as the oil? While I don't agree that metal shavings to this extent are normal, even allowing that they were I still wouldn't expect them coming out the drain plug unless the filter is clogged or ineffective.

That's always been the kicker for me. At some point you cross the line between taking care of your vehicle vs. keeping it pristine for the next guy. I previously owned a Porsche and the guys in that crowd almost all seemed to be saving their car for the next guy...never fully enjoying it for fear of hurting resale or causing problems years later.

It's like these guys have never sold or traded a vehicle before. Almost no one asks what kind of oil you used, if you replaced it early, etc. Even things like door dings or chips rarely register on the buyers radar. So all those guys that hand wash (with two buckets so they don't get dirt in the wash bucket) then wax religiously to protect the paint get absolutely no return on that investment--at least in terms of financial return...it might make them happy to have a shiney car.

I'm not even sure there is much evidence to prove that using a $12/qt oil is any better than a $5/qt oil over the life of these vehicles. There are plenty of high mileage Tacomas on the road that have probably used the cheapest oil, changed slightly late, with cheap filters.

I'm the almost no one. Since I buy only used trucks one of the criteria for a sale/no-sale or at least an asking price is a folder full of receipts or documentation of maintenance. But, yeah, I don't get to the detail of asking which oil other than to assume that the weight was what Toyota recommended.

    Engine breaking in?

Yes the filter is supposed to catch most of this. Mine I didn't do the oil. Dealer did. Once I use up my free ones I'll be doing it. The metal i saw was on the dip stick. barely noticeable though.

According to them its normal for the break in period. After your second oil change you shouldn't see it anymore. You're supposed to replace filter with oil change every 16k km based on toyota suggestions. I just did it earlier to clean out all that break in shit for a new engine. I won't be doing my next one until 32k likely. Maybe 26k. But will also be getting oil tests done.

Yeah, maybe true for the people that trade their vehicles in after 3, 5 or even 10 years.

I took reasonably good care of my last truck, but wasn't ocd about it.

In hindsight, if I had fluid filmed the underside and washed/ waxed it more often, I might still be driving it. As it was, after 19 years the paint was shot and rusting through, the frame was rusting to the point where I decided it was not prudent to put money into it to keep it going, since at best I probably might have gotten 5 more years and would be dumping money into it between now and then.

I decided to get one more truck, and keep after the things I wasn't concerned with last time, the things that come into play at the 20 year mark, namely rust and paint protection.

The mechanicals and electronics are more of a crap shoot, but am hoping for the best with those. Keeping on top of fluid changes and using quality fluids help, in my experience.

So it is not the next guy I am concerned with.

I just want to make sure this truck lasts me long enough that I am not in the same position I was with the last one.

You and I are the same in this respect, the next guy is us. I kept the last truck until it was 25 years old and was at the decision point for either a serious refresh/restoration or moving on to a newer truck. This one I expect to keep a long time, too. Looking back I should have done the work on the old truck, frame-off, engine swap. But hindsight is 20/20.

That said, it's a truck and I don't baby it. I take care of it, probably to the point of OCD on it mechanically. But I don't care if the paint isn't shiny waxed, has worn carpet and it gets dents and dings. Just as long as it stays structurally sound I'm good.

I have done 4 oil changes in 30000 km. I did the first at 1000 km which I knew wouldn't be clean due to break in wear; I also installed a magnetic drain plug (Gold Plug).

The second was at 10000 km and had very little wear. The magnetic drain plug was relatively clean as well. The 3rd was done at 20000 km and extremely clean and my latest at 30000 km was spotless.

I use Pennzoil Ultra 0w20 and OEM Toyota filters for those wondering.
