Hi, New to this forum. I was seriously considering a new Tacoma but have been put off by the only engine option being the 4 cylinder. I would need to tow a single axle trailer to pull my side by side, not sure if would be up to the task?

How much does your trailer weigh?

not that much 6x10 foot single axle I have pulled it with my Honda Pilot that has the V6 and did fine. That's why I am hesitant about the 4 cylinder turbo, my experience is if you work an engine that small it's not going to last.

Between 6,000 and 6,500 towing capacity, depending on trim. You can choose to trust that or not. Up to you. Lots of people that are very happy with towing so far. I actually don't think I have seen someone unhappy with towing yet.

The tacoma with 4 cylinder has higher towing capacity than the pilot with a v6.

I see a good number of F-150 STX towing things usually boats, and they don't usually take those offroad. Towing a SxS you might want something more off road oriented.

The only engine is the 2.4t you can get it with the hybrid motor which Toyota says is to assist with towing.

I did see where Toyota will be building a new line of Tacoma hybrids. What those are I have no idea, maybe a PHEV. I presume it's still the 48v mild hybrid, and that new line of Tacoma hybrid is the 6G 4R being built in Apaseo el Grande, 1.1 billon is a lot of money.

OP go test drive one and come back and report on your findings.. this isn't 1992 anymore.. the number of cylinders does not matter much. id argue the 4th gen taco would tow circles around the pilot!

I'm not into subjective data (what's the weight?), but this new power train pulls like a beast and is much better at towing than the old six-cylinder. I tried kicking mine into Tow/Haul mode while pulling my 1500-pound camper, and it's too much—too much power, which is an odd thing to conclude.

Not this crap again. OP, go ask Chevy why they are putting turbo 4 bangers in their full size trucks.

Can the 2024 tacoma tow....absolutely. Just stay within the published specs and you are good to go. Will it tow an 8500lbs 35 foot camper....no. several towing videos out there on you tube.

    Apologies for sounding pissed off.

The old 4.0 I believe was less than 6000lbs. Yes OP go drive one. I am on my 6th Tacoma and cant say for reliability yet but this is the best one of the bunch. I also traded a Pro in on a base offroad manual and its still a way better truck

You've gotta drop this whole "it's a four-banger" thing. Modern four cylinder engines make as much or more torque across a wider rev range, and more horsepower, than the V8's of yore. They do it on regular gasoline and do it burning less of it. The wheezy 100hp L4's you remember from the 80's are long dead. Go drive one if you don't believe me.

All I miss from bigger displacement engines with more cylinders is the noise. I will freely admit that the T24-FTS is far from the best sounding engine I've ever laid ears on. But, if that's what you're here for, I suspect you're barking up the wrong tree and that you're in entirely the wrong orchard.

The gen 4 Tacoma engine is a new heavy duty 4 cylinder variation of an engine family years old now. The Tundra in that family had a problem from metal chips not cleaned in manufacturing - not that it is insufficient. Unlike other makers Toyota is still standing behind their products.

Having had 1999 - 2016 interactions of the Toyota V6 and 5 speed automatics I say there were and are good but gen 4 is a whole other league. Gobs of torque below 2000 RPM and 8 speed gearing that leaves the earlier generations screaming in pain in the same scenario.

High speed hauling and headwinds will drop it from the EPA ratings but for occasional but long distance carry and towing trips my first 4+ and 4000+ miles have been great.

The 4th gen also leaves the prior generations and competition in the dust for other important things. Quiet, comfort, top safety pick rating, great safety/convenience suite and an interior design that doesn't require so much screen tapping. Actually, you can operate all the important 4th gen stuff with gloves on.

Some early issues some have had are well documented, you can search by VIN.

If I was towing a lot and it was heavy I might consider something different. So far my work oriented long bed TRD OR is a great tool. I have to remind myself my V6 Toyotas also dropped fuel economy when some towing or payloads were a lot.

    Delay gratification and try stuff.

Exactly. This new engine puts out damn near the same torque to the rear wheels as the old V8 Tundra engine.

The new 4 cylinder turbo engine is a significant improvement, especially over the 3.5 V6. It's better than the even older 4.0, just not by as much.

The max tow rating won't change because they also factor in the tongue weight when calculating tow rating and a Tacoma doesn't have much payload. But the new engine will move it down the road much better. Particularly in mountains or high altitude where there is less O2 in the air.

This 2024 4-banger is Twice the engine than my 4.7L Gen 1 Tundra motor. That motor got horrible gas mileage and couldn't tow much. This is my 3rd Tacoma and it's definitely the best one yet; no comparison. I specifically waited for this drivetrain knowing it would out perform all the previous setups.

Some people have the 'four-banger thing' up their asses and will until the fifth-gen is looking at the fourth-gen in the rearview. Tech changes with time, usually for the better. Sometimes it takes folks a while to catch up.

At some point there will probably be a plug-in Taco, or a fully electric Taco, or a next-gen who-knows-what powered Taco. But god forbid a cyber Taco...

I am seem to be stuck on 11.7l/100 which is 20.1 mpg. My last Tacoma was about 17 mpg so I am happy with this.

to be fair, i have only been driving around town, so a lot of stop and go, but i am getting 19.5 on the stock tires and air dam removed, which is about the same as my 3G w/ KO2s and air dam removed, maybe a tad better.

i need to give it more time and/or stop obsessing about MPG. i already had to remove fuel economy from the home screen.
