I've been doing some digging around on forums but couldn't find a thread asking this question. I've been thinking about upgrading my sound system with a aftermarket HU / sub setup but I had a thought....has anyone just bought a new HU / Four channel amp / new door speakers and just went with that instead?

I listen to rock mostly so I don't have a need for window vibrating bass....but some extra power would be nice. Barring that would a aftermarket HU / speaker be sufficient and should I even consider the four channel in that case? I'm fairly new to car audio - usually bought my stuff from best buy but I'm looking at installing all of this myself this time around.

A lift, some wheels, some tires, some performance, some cosmetic and then audio.
You can go a nice set of components up front and a nice set of rear coax powered by the 4 channel amp.

I installed 6x9s, tweeters, and 6.5s(rear) powered by a four channel amp. Does what I wanted it to do. I have an access cab so I didn't want to lose space by adding a box. 6x9s give me the little bit of bass I wanted, can still rattle mirrors but nothing like a powered sub.

    YES!!
I'm actually going to do that this weekend. I bought the HU and front speakers when I bought the truck. This weekend I'm moving those speakers to the rear doors and putting components up front. I will be using a 4 channel amp as well. However, I will get the sub later down the road cuz I ran out of mula.

If you plan to upgrade or add later, make sure to wire it up not for future upgrades. This way you don't need to be ripping shit out again to do it.

Been doing a lot of digging on crutchfield but one thing I noticed they don't say the 6x9's fit up front. Did you have to mod anything at all?

*edit* Answered my own question by reading the install stickies up top :)

But now for question #2 ....does the speaker I buy have to have special connections to hook it up to a 4 channel amp? or can I go 6x9 up front / 6.5" in the back and then just run wiring from the amp to the speakers?

Some use adapters to make it easy clip on. You don't need anything special, just standard speaker connectors. I forget the technical word for them.

The adapters are to use your stock wiring from the headunit on aftermarket speakers

If you're adding an amp you'll run new speaker wire directly from the amp to the speakers. You can solder them or use some crimp on spade connectors.
