In May of 2015 I left my job of 8 years. Got to the point where I wasn't happy so I decided to take a road trip I had been wanting to do for a while. So I got a midrise shell and built sleeping platform in the back. Got some spare parts and took care of a couple things before I left in April. Took over 3k pictures on this trip So this is going to take a while to complete using just a fraction of them.

The truck: 2011 Acc. Cab 4cyl. 5spd. 4x4. 86275 miles when I left Maine. Lifted at about 75k miles with 5100 front struts and 885 OME coils. Camburg ball joint UCa's. The rear has Dakar leafs, added the add a leaf part way through the trip, and Icon 2.0 something or other remote resi shocks, and wheelers super bumps on all four corners. The back bumps have the 3/8" spacers. 1/4" IFS skid and 3/16" transmission and transfer case skids. Sliders were added in Moab. Thank You Phil I've gotten some use out them since. 235/85/16 Cooper discoverer at3's.

The platform I made in the back was pretty crude and simple. Never took any pictures, but it's still there so I might snag some in the next day or. 4x4 posts on the corners with 2x6 boards connecting the posts. Top edge of the boards sits one inch above the 4x4's. Strapping runs along the boards from corner to corner for support fro the plywood top. The plywood top is two sections so I can access the front compartments without have to pull the whole thing. I used a 3/4" backpacking mat, 1" layer of dense foam and 3/4" layer of egg crate foam as a pad. Sleeping bag rated for -5 unzipped as a blanket.

The frame has a divider from wheel well to wheel well that splits the bed half. The front half of the bed is split into two compartments. One compartment I made into a cooler box with a drain line that runs out one the bed drains. The other compartment I filled with my welding tools, spare parts, and a tent on top. The compartment near the tailgate carried my cooking equipment, 5 5gal. gas cans, 2 shovels, truck repair tools and miscellaneous vehicle stuff.

In the cab I kept my tire chains and enough clothes to go two weeks without wearing anything except pants twice. Took some cold weather clothes too. Also had 140 feet of synthetic winch rope, 4 ton come along, three snatch blocks, a half dozen shackles and 100ft of straps. Various other small items in the cab. Truck was loaded front and back.

I replaced the needle bearing in the driver side diff with the ECGS bushing before leaving and did the driver side wheel bearing while I was there along with all the related seals. Also Replaced the u-joints in the front driveshaft. Didn't need to though and kept the old ones for spares. I do the trans, t-case, diffs every 30k, and since it was so close to time I did them before leaving. I took replacement dorman lca's with me along with OEM cam and caster hardware. Spare u-joints for front and rear. Spare cv axles, wheel bearing for the passenger side and all seals required. Probably leaving something out here.

Saturday April 18th I left N. Anson Maine and headed to a friends house near Middlebury VT. Spent that evening sleeping in the back of the truck for the first time. It was a decent night. The next day spent time with friends. Left VT on the 20th at 630 in the morning and went west to NY, down through to PA, into WV and went to bed north of Bowling Green KY at 330am.

From Bowling Green I drove to Tulsa OK. Then to Edmond OK where I spent a couple days hanging with some people I used to work with that were finishing a job out there.

Trip really kind of starts here. Before I was just blasting across the part of the country I wasn't interested in.

When I left Edmond I drove north on 74 to route 33. Took 33 west and turned off towards a place called the antelope hills. Did some exploring there and then continued west on 33 until I hit 30 south. Took 30 south to Hollis Oklahoma. Before I reached I saw a snake in the road. Guy behind me hit the snake. We both stopped. It was rattler and still alive. Killed it with my shovel and took the rattles for my grandmother. Went west out of Oklahoma to Caprock Canyon State Park in Quitaque Texas.

Storms moved through to the south of 33. Some of them were pretty violent.

Next stop was caprock canyon park in Texas. Stayed here for a day and half exploring. Mostly hiking, but the park is ringed by roads. The eastern side was a dirt road with just some fun easy wheeling.

Head west buddy and check out New Mexico. I think Santa Fe and north of Santa Fe is some beautiful country.

Good luck on your journey and I hope you find the peace and happiness coming your way.

Left Caprock Canyon on the 26th of April and headed for Palo Duro Canyon state park. Took 286 west till I hit 207 north and then to the park. Palo Duro canyon was a pretty cool place. It rained a fair amount while I was there. The river, Prairie Dog Fork of the Red i think, flooded in the park and made for interesting times.

Left the Palo Duro on April 28th and drove to the Carlsbad Caverns. Took I27 south to Lubbock and then 87 south to Lamesa TX. From there it 180 west till I hit White's City and the access to the caverns. Hard to get good pictures in a cave.

So I finished up the caverns earlier than expected. What to do now? I looked at my map and decided to head further south and back into TX. Big Bend National Park was my goal. So I took 62 back southwest and back into TX. Turned off 62 onto 652 headed west. Drove through some booming country towards Orla TX and Pecos TX. From Pecos I took 17 south to Davis Mountain State Park where I spent the night. The only picture here from the park are the Javelina. The rest are the drive there.

Left the davis mountains park on 118 headed south and took 90 east after hitting alpine. Took 385 south to Big Bend NP.
The first three of the following pictures are on the drive down 385. Some beautiful sights there, and the rest are all Big Bend. I spent a week in Big Bend. They Have back country campsite and some 4x4 trails there. Did all the trails and a little hiking, but it was getting a little warm for this northerner.

Gorgeous! Aren't we lucky to live in such an incredibly diverse country where we can just head our front door, drive, and get to see all this stuff?! It still amazes me.

Thanks for sharing all this with us. If you're able, we'd all love to see more!

So far the truck had been going pretty good, but in the warmer areas I had notice the engine temp creeping up on the ultra gauge. So When I left Big Bend I headed for El Paso. Had dick Poe toyota in El Paso replace the thermostat and everything was fine after that. Left El Paso headed west on I10 to Deming New Mexico. Took 180 out of Deming to Silver City where I took 15 north to the Cliff Dwelling National Monument. Very nice country north of Silver City. First five Pictures are the drive to the monument.

I left the cliff dwelling monument some time before noon and drove back on 15 till it connects to 35. Took 35 down to mimbres where I had lunch and filled up the truck. Then Backtracked 35 till National forest road 150 turned off. Took 150 out through to 30 and then 159 past snow lake and out to Reserve NM somehow. These road numbers probably don't add up to current ones because they were out of a 2007 road atlas and the back roads weren't detailed very well. Long afternoon. Saw a ton of elk and some pretty country. Drove past one dude ranch out there and chatted with a cowgirl for a bit.

It was long day getting to reserve and I didn't get out of the woods till well after dark. I left Reserve NM heading west on 12 to Arizona. Hit 180 and took that to 191 in Arizona. Drove up to Eagar Arizona where I took 260 and trucked it all the way to Jerome AZ. Took a dirt road out of Jerome, which is a pretty mountainside town, to Perkinsville and eventually Williams AZ. From Williams I drove up 64 to the Grand Canyon.

Awesome pictures. Makes me nostalgic... I spent a lot of time in west Texas. I wish you would have made the jaunt up to Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Love it up there. Probably the best kept secret in the U.S. along with BBNP. Off the beaten path and not easy to get to.

The pictures of Palo Duro are beautiful. Got it at a good time - nice and green after some rain, obviously.

I reached the grand canyon on the night of May 7th, 19 days after leaving Maine. I don't have a clue what we're at for mileage at this point. Started a trip journal but didn't keep it going I hate writing. The first few days it snowed at the canyon. Which was fine by me. I did most of my camping in the park still sleeping in the back of the truck. Up to this point I had only spent two nights in hotels.

Did some exploring around the south rim my first day there. It was overcast and started snowing later in the day.

Thank you. I'll have to make it around to check out Guadalupe NP. I got really lucky with the weather on this trip. Missed some ugly storms all the way to Texas. Hit the rain at Palo Duro but that was fine by me. Every place I went in the southwest was greener than usual from the locals were telling me.

More GC pictures from a better picture taking day. The enormity of this spectacular place takes a while to sink. There were a few times I just sat on the edge and stared out over it all mesmerized.

After looking at this thing for a while I decided I wanted to go to the bottom. Didn't really want to do it all in one day and I don't think I could have. So I did an overnight into the canyon.
