I hit Riggins early afternoon and motored right on through. Up 95 to Grangeville the 13 east and took 14 out to Elk city and drove to Montana on dirt. Spent the night out there before reaching Montana.

Got a couple pictures like this.

You can almost see where I spent the night. Where the road comes out of the shadow just left of center there was a pull off there. Of course it might have been another spot, but that looks like it could be it from the way the land lays.

Same picture as above but you can see the shadow land now.

Went to bed a while after this. Continued on to Montana in the morning. Dusky Grouse below. Bigger than ruffed grouse by a fair amount. Shot one in Utah this fall as I'm out here working.

Entered Montana over the Nez Perce Pass. FR 468 east to 473. 473 north to 93 and 93 north through Darby MT to 38 by Grantsdale. 38 east to 1 north to I90 east. From I90 i took 271 north to 141 north to 200 west. 200 west till I hit 83 north. Left 83 north on the Placid Creek Rd headed west in to the Lolo NF. Took the placid creek rd till it turned into the Jocko Rd till it turned into 559. Took 559 to 200 west to 135 west. 135 to I90 east down to Superior MT where I hit 257 south till it turned into FR 250. Took that all the way to Hoodoo Pass in the Bitter Root Mountains and back across the Idaho Border. Only took two pictures in Montana on this leg, but it covered a good sized piece of country.

After Crossing into Idaho I continued west through the Clearwater NF to Orofino. Took 12 west out of Orofino to Clarkston and then up 95 north to Potlatch. Took 6 west out of Potlatch to 3 north to St. Maries where I headed west to Avery. North out of Avery to Wallace and still north through the Coeur d'Alene Mountains to Clark Fork on 200. I was pretty well pictured out at this point. Can only find one I took. If I had my gazetteer for Idaho I could at least use the deatailed maps to jog my memory and describe it all. It beautiful country though.

After I hit Clark fork I headed east into Montana again. Turned north off 200 on 56 in MT. When 56 hit 2 I headed east to Kalispell. Left Kalispell on 93 north to Whitefish where I took the East Lakeshore Dr. north Until it became the Red Meadow Rd. Took Red Meadow east to Outside North Fork then went south along the western edge of Glacier NP. Entered GNP at the Camas Cr. gate. Drove through the park on the going to the sun rd. After I went through the park I went north on 89 till I hit 464 going east. Then I took the Galbreath Rd north and slept out on the Canal Tr or Camp Nine Rd.

Saw this little guy just walking along the edge of the Going to the Sun Rd. in GNP.

Sadly GNP is more "Disappearing Big Piles of Snow" NP now. Still extremely beautiful though.

After spending the night on the Canal Tr. I made my way back to 89 and headed south to Kiowa where I took 49 South. Took a dirt off 89 that I think was BIA 103.
    IMG_7187_2e92e15ffde8320a4f2da0ff9c6aaa63988fcc2b.jpg
    IMG_7192_084cdc1edb695c479aa8a5bfe6d306712b71c576.jpg

Went into GNP again on the Two Medicine Rd. Saw this bear in the park.
    IMG_7185_53e565aeedaec9b45063b7e85a0f6bf597fca043.jpg
Pretty sure this was in the park too.
    IMG_7194_069d7a10d29b604668ec2fdfd11db77b4c2fbf88.jpg

After leaving the Two Medicine Rd I went south on 49 till it hit 2 and then headed west along the south border of GNP. Went back into the park at West Glacier and headed north and out of the park on the Camas Rd. Went back north on 486 past the Red Meadow road I came in on to Trail Creek. Saw them fighting the fire on the west border of GNP when I was up by Trail Creek.
    IMG_7195_b1e0d3c79a247cd7bfcf40144fa599c6ec7a2d4f.jpg

Then headed west on Trail Creek Rd FR 114. Saw where somebody had a bad day.
    IMG_7196_d741767e29816974f6ffce7e1b67c2af581dae80.jpg

Continued on FR 114 till I hit FR 756 loop towards Tobacco. When I hit 93 I went north past Eureka to 37. 37 west till the bridge that Crosses Lake Koocanusa. That's a beautiful lake and country, but I never took pictures. Went north on the Yaak Valley-Libby Dam Rd to FR 337. Took FR 337 west to FR 7183, all called Basin Cr Rd. FR 7183 turned into FR 336 which came out on 567 where I headed north to Yaak MT. Took 508 west out of Yaak to 2 west back into Idaho. That was all in the Kootenai NF in the Purcell Mtns. Beautiful country, but I was pictured out.

It's weird because I know I was around Yaak for the fourth of July. Then I crossed back into Idaho and took these pictures on the sixth. I need my Idaho map because I don't have the route highlighted on my general map. So I can't tell you where they were taken, just that they were taken on the sixth of July somewhere in north Idaho.

I entered Washington state on 57 but I don't know if i took 57 north from two or came into it from the east over the north side of Priest Lake in Idaho. I need that gazetteer to know for sure, but that matches up with the pictures from the sixth of July better. I took 57 into metaline falls washington then south on 31 till it hit 20. I took 20 east to Sedro Woolley. Then 9 north to 542 to mount baker. Spent a week or so in that area. Seems like I might be missing some pictures too. Ill need to see if I can find them.

Here is the actual Mount Baker, not the ski place.

After spending a week in the Mount Baker area I decided to try the part of my trip I was really looking forward to. I was going to cross into Canada at Sumass and head north on 1 all the way to 93 then drive north through Banff NP and Jasper NP to 16 west to 40 north to Grand Prairie BC. Was going to take 43 to Dawson Creek then the Alaska HWY to Fairbank AK. Then see about visiting family around Anchorage, but that was all dashed.

Canada wouldn't let me enter due to my past. If I had known I had known about a relative that died up there a few days before I might have been able to swing it, but I didn't and the idea of using that to get in and then not going to the funeral still doesn't sit right.

I spent most of a month touring around Washington. Mostly around Olympic NP. I'll get to the rest of the trip later. Got to see if I can find more pictures, and I'm about typed out right now.

Your photo of the snow bank with the shovel is real off roading.

I'm in the South now but remember going back country with a shovel and come along. You can die out there from hypothermia if you make a mistake and can't get help!

Thankfully at that point it would have been an easy trip back to civilization as long as I didn't break anything.

I was a pipe and tube welder for eight years and weld inspector for two before I did this trip. I was 28 at the time of this trip and finished almost on my 29th birthday in august. I paid for this on my own and could have afforded to do much more. Already working again. Got a job in Utah at the end of september as an inspector on a refinery expansion.

Don't worry about me not working. I may not like to work, but I'd rather rely on myself as I can provide a much better lifestyle for me than the government can.
