Hey, thanks for sharing your trip, currently on mine right now. Really like your truck build out and that you kept it pretty simple. Will be taking some notes from your trip even though it seems like we are/were heading in opposite directions most the time! Great photos too. I've given up trying to update a trip report while we are on the road, happy with as little screen time as possible right now.

Currently in Cour Delane Idaho. Will be heading to flathead Nationalforest and glacier. Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming soon.

I am so glad @cmoterboat revived this thread. I took a couple of days to leisurely read your posts and enjoy your photographs. Through your adventure, I was flooded with memories of the trip I took in 1974. Right after graduating high school a couple of buddies and myself, each with $300 in American Express Travelers Checks, loaded up my 1966 VW Van with our surfboards, camping gear, a pound of home grown and took off. We were headed to California to surf, but decided to take the scenic route. It took us 5 days to get out of Texas and from there we (like you) traveled NM, AZ, CO, WY, MT, ID, WA, and OR before making it to CA. Along the way we would visit and camp at National Parks or State Parks staying 3 or 4 days at most places. Some places were hidden or little know gems. Slide Rock in AZ for example, where you parked on the side of the narrow (then) road and hiked back. Now it's a state park along a nice highway. And yes @cmoterboat, we went through Coeur d'Alene. Not much of a town back then, but what a beautiful lake with very cold water and a nice park where I took the opurtunity to change the oil in the Van. We went to the 1974 World's Fair in Spokane for a couple of days before heading over to Olympia to pick up 101. We stayed on 101 through Oregon (they had the best state parks) while surfing a few places along the way to California. After checking out Redwood and Sequoia NPs, we ended up in Santa Cruz and fell in love with the place. We liked it so much, Chuck and I got jobs and were ready to stay - forever. That was until Bob had an accident while we were surfing at Steamer Lane that resulted in him being blinded in one eye. After a week or so in the hospital, Bob was able to travel so we headed back to Texas. We got back to our home town in late October and course our parents were happy to see us after being gone for so long. I took a lot of pictures, actually slides using good ol' Kodachrome 64. I also kept a log of where we went or camped and recorded our fuel purchases. HA! the most expensive was 69¢ a gallon and I raised hell - highway robbery I told the guy running the station. Those sllides and the log keeps that trip alive. To this day, we are all so glad we took that trip and talk about the memories at every HS reunion.

You sir, I congratulate for following your heart and your quest that will live with you for the rest of you life. Don't stop, I didn't. There's a lot to see and do out there.

Thanks again for posting your adventure. It made an old man young again.
