I'll give you another reason for the Bilstein 5100 suggestion-

You'll want a second set of shocks for when your main shocks are getting either rebuilt or simply revalved.

Buy the Bilsteins and do a rear shock relocation later after you move.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

Maybe because the Fox are more expensive? :notsure:

I've been running Bilstiens in back for over 2 years. They haven't blown on me. And I do shit on trails with a LOT of weight in the bed... and my bump stops aren't even set up correctly lol

You keep talking about ease of servicing... Fox will need to be re-built. Bilstein, you just pull off the old shock, throw in garbage, unbox new shock, put on new shock. Are you equipped to rebuild shocks? If not, what are you going to do for rear shocks for 2 weeks while you wait for the Fox shocks to get rebuilt? Also, you have to pay attention to the uniballs on Fox... Bilstein is rubber bushing.

You also mentioned reservoir shocks being more reliable? No, there is no real increase in reliability on Reservoir shocks. They perform better at speeds and with washboards. But they aren't inherently any more reliable than non-resi shocks.

I'm not preaching on Bilstein... I run them now, but they are soon to be replaced, and I will be doing the shock relocation.

Fox may be great for MTB... They aren't the best in the industry here though.

I'd say they are in solid 3rd place.

    ADS
    King
    Fox

Some will probably argue the ADS - King 1st and 2nd... But I doubt there will be anyone, with experience put Fox over ADS or King

Is for Icon... I'd rather stick with Bilstein.

Radflo could also be thrown in somewhere too... Just not a lot of people run them, so it's hard to get a real guage on them. I've seen wildly mixed reviews on them.

Not too sure why you got a custom leaf pack if you want drop in shocks....

Should have just gotten an all pro expo pack or dakars, ome shocks or 5100s and called it a day

Towing on 96. Not much in the way of leaf options. Stock pack is shot. Cost was the same

There are as many if not a few more leaf pack options than there are drop in rear shocks for our truck

Never said that resis are more reliable just more enduring in heavy use applications which I have.

As mentioned I’ve had bad experience with billies

I’m a big believer in sustainable design. I don’t like that you can’t rebuild them. As mentioned I’m an avid mountain biker. I think I can handle a rebuild.

The truck needs to be used across the country and then out to service right way in mixed terrain. I’d rather get the right thing now but there is a limit to the fabrication budget I am willing to expend at marginal gains especially with the economy in a standstill.

i do appreciate the feedback. I didn’t realize you were a new post to the conversation. The reality is I’m trying to find a middle ground with the resources both financially and physically that i have at my disposal while still doing right to the nature of the overall build. One thing has lead to another with all of this and it’s way beyond my general understanding. I have done my research but that only gets you so far without hands on experience. It might be best to throw a set of 5100s on for the time being and address this property after I move

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

Do you have a nitrogen set up that will push 200+ psi? Have you priced it out?

Late to the conversation here but I build 2-3 trucks a year and have tried a lot of different shocks. In my experience the Fox’s are too stiff for a good ride on the Tacoma’s and agree with everyone else that the 5100’s would be your best bet as long as they will work with your deaver spring travel lengths. Bump stops should remain in the same place if you got stock replacement deavers but the shocks may limit droop which isn’t a big deal. I think you will be happy with the ride and they shouldn’t blow out like your VW did.
