And this folks is why Fram is the #1 selling filter. Because most people don't care about the oil in their car.

I don't need to read through the posts to know that there's not enough evidence to proove a filter caused all that. I used the SEARCH THIS THREAD feature and typed in FRAM and this is all that I got.
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/search.php?searchid=699526
That's 5 pages worth of discussion with only 5 posts referring to FRAM.

So either the search feature sucks or .....there's just no proof in your threads.

I'm a Machine Operator by trade. I troubleshoot problems on a daily basis. I look for the route of the cause and I know there can be hidden things occur in the process. So you're absolutely WRONG. I am not going to hide the truth just to protect my arguements.

Why is it that the Fram-haters are soooo hell bent in trying to convince everyone they're junk? DO YOU Have your own personal experiences with them that they're bad? Or are you just a band-wagon humper following the orders of what everyone else tells you online? If you are.....you have no RIGHT to argue your points because you have no legimate experience.

Nope actually had a Fram fail on me too. The ADBV failed (poor seal againstthe end cap). Luckily for me on my Trailblazer, the DIS notified me on the problem (low oil pressure on startup) and I changed the oil and filter out before I had a catastrophe. I've had several friends that had Fram issues as well. One had a leak out of the base plate. YOu could probably make an argument that he over tightened the filter, but I wouldn't know for sure. But yes, based on my experience, my friends experiences and the other stories that don't seem to deviate to far from the norm on auto forums and bobistheoilguy.com I have no reason to not believe or doubt that Fram in an inferior oil filter when compared to others.

Another thing to think about is how many car enthusiasts recommend Fram? I don't see too many. In fact is Fram a major sponsor of Nascar? I don't see guys like Chip Foose rushing to endorse Fram. I have yet to meet a reputable mechanic that has told me Fram is a good product.

Just how people find it funny there are all these Fram bashers, I find it funny when people get offended that others bash fram. I'ts alomst like your questioning their faith. Quite comical....

Perfect example - YOUR post #91

You've stated your case and experiences. Much appreciatted.

This shit is beat to death everytime and there's no right or wrong answer. State your experiences and shut up. Let everyone make their own decisions.
And if people use FRAM - don't bash them for using them. Again, state your experiences and shut up. People don't need to be bashed for using something they want to use and have used for years. So be it.

The provider is FRAM...they are wanting to shut up rumor mongers like the poorly informed techs. They say as much with

"there is absolutely no validity in comments
that the Fram filter should not be
used for this application or that it may
    cause engine failures associated with
    plugged nozzles."

Fram stated EXACTLY why they did the redesign even while they noted Dodge/Cummins never found any reason to assign cause to the filters: they are interested in their customers. It's not hard for a non-Fram basher to figure out why: BECAUSE THE POORLY INFORMED TECHS ARE DOING EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING: SPREADING IGNORANCE!

It's not at all clear from this exactly what Dodge said, but the Fram paper says Dodge 'RECOMMENDED', which quite pointedly DOES NOT MEAN REQUIRED! I'd accept Fram's characterization of Dodge's position WAY before I would someone who doesn't seem to comprehend the difference between RECOMMEND and REQUIRE, especially since they got skin in the game.

I don't really think an isolated ADBV failure, while not desireable, could hardly be catastrophic. It does mean there could be somewhat greater wear and tappet noise at startup but even then use of a quality oil and sane start-up practices mitigate it. But catastrophic? no...not likely. That's pure histrionics.

I'd not only make the case the guy overtightened the filter, but also that they might have pinched the gasket, or forgoten to lube it, or someone dropped the thing on the ground or rolled over it with a forklift truck before I'd blame the filter 'design'.

But then, I'm not a Fram basher.

Or to state it even more succinctly: most people aren't lug-nut polishers! They just use the crap out of their cars and don't care about obsessive details that don't matter for a hill of beans.

This will be the last I post on this topic as I see can tell you will vehemently defend Fram to the bitter end, and I'm not trying to win any converts; just open peoples perspectives. I' and other have accomlished that with the OP. Surprisingly you and Janster skirt around the issue I posed earlier of why you bought a Toyota over other brands of mid size trucks? Is there empirical proof that our 2nd Generation Tacoma's are indeed a better truck compared to the other offerings? No!! It's all based on opinion and experirence...so you're argument doesn't hold any value in my book in regards to fram. To caveat on my earlier post in regards to Chrysler not recommending Fram, I did your homework for you and looked up the TSB Dodge issued in regards to the matter at hand to get the facts on the matter. In fact Chrysler actually recommend several filters (statement ignored on the Fram posting) including one from a major automotive competitor, AC Delco (GM); yet crazily excludes any Fram application for the 5.9L :goingcrazy:. I would venture to say if they came out and explicilty stated "Do not use Fram filters" they would face an impending deformation lawsuit on behalf of Allied Signal/Honeywell. If this still doesn't open your thinking ports on Fram applications then I guess nothing truly will unless you yourself experience a Fram failure. Maybe it's just me, but I don't need to stick my nose in poo to know it stinks. Myself, i'll go with people's word if there's enough validity and enough people to say it stinks; there's some valdidity to statistics. ( Far more people complaining about Fram vs other manufacturers) As I and other mentioned already for the price of the extended guard filter I can get a Pure One filter with better components & recommended for a longer interval; and for the better offerings from Fram, the price of the filter itself makes it a bad value to higher offerings from other brands as well (price vs product offering). The Extended Guard filter from Fram (The High End) only offers an 80% filtering rate, compared to the 90+% rates from the competitors, so again I ask why would I use a Fram in that instance? With the Pure One or Wix applications I and many others around here use at roughly the same cost as the Fram Orange Can and Tough Guard, I don't have to worry if I go a little over the 5K interval Toyota recommends; however the Fram Orange can is only rated to 5K. With my Fram issue on my Trailblazer I emailed Fram and their reply was the "Extended Guard filter is not applicable for the Trailblazer due to the recommended service interval." Funny, the similiary priced AC Delco filter I bought from Walmart had no worries of going to the Trailblazer 10K-12K mile interval schedule, and the AC Delco was cheaper than the Fram. Reading posts past, no one here said Fram will lead to the utter demise of your vehicle, yet you and Janster seem to be stuck on that notion. I'll step off my soap box....post out...

ummm...the link isn't to a TSB, it's an extract from the TSB and someone's interpretation of what they think it means.

It will be mine too...I don't really intend to appear recommending Fram (I said as much and pointedly wanted to separate the orange can from silver and gold.) But I just don't like seeing something bashed on poor basis by people who truely don't understand the technical side of things. Not that I do...but being an engineer I do have recognition of when things are being incorrectly generalized and mis-interpreted. Being in the aircraft industry, I happen to know that people would be appalled to see just how apparently flimsy many of the structures are that carry them at 35,000 feet above the ground. Appearances aren't what they seem.

So far, every empirical 'argument' has been shown full of holes and always seems to boil down to opinion: well, opinion is just fine. I think that's the beauty of the market place, it's where opinion is expressed in it's most elegant way. By all means, people should buy the filter that gives them warm fuzzies all over.

Oh: I bought my Tacoma 'cause Isuzu stopped making Rodeo's. The good part-time 4x4 ones with ground clearance and skid plates standard. Also, it was a decent price used. It's always AFTER I buy that I read about the bad stuff, like frame rusting problems in prior gen.

In closing: bashing the biggest is a popular past time in America, eveyone does it. Walmart always gets it...McD's...Toyota just saw it's turn in the bashing spotlight. IMO, this Fram bashing just boils down to the same sad expression of people's desire to destroy what someone else has built to be the biggest. That sickness just burns me up.

Gee, there sure is a lot of passion over oil filters.
Some guys even say they love their brand of oil filters.

Read your owners manual and follow it. Which by the way will recommend 5K OCI.

The 3K OCI is very old school and is a hold over from when oils and engine tolerance were not all that good. In the past 20 years. both oil and engines have improved much that the 3K OCI is not the norm and 5K, 7.5K and even 10K with synthetics are the new norms. Oil is not cheap anymore and to do 3K OCI is archaic and a waste of resources and money.

People are creatures of habit and generally fall in line with what I call "legacy marketing". That is to mean if you grew up seeing dad use 3K OCI's and a FRAM filter, then you have reference of what you think is OK to use since how can Dad have been wrong? Problem is that Dad was not wrong back then but has now failed to evolve with the times with better products and engineering we have today.

People get too wrapped around the axle when it comes to oil, oil filters and when to change it. Just follow what the manual calls out in all regards and you will be fine. There is very little evidence that buying $10 premium filter gets you better wear over the life of a vehicle than one who used a basic $3 filter.

As I stated earlier....You've stated your own experience - so now, why can't you and the rest of the bashers leave it alone and shut up?

The only reason why I'm still here - is because the FRAM bashers continually bash the rest of us.

Get over it. We don't need to know just how passionate you are about how bad you think they are. Don't you have something better to do?

No, but I do use the Fram in the pink & purple polka dot can. :p:p

The truck gets Toyota filters for now because I bought a case of filters for cheap when I bought the truck. Our corvette might actually have a fram in it - can't remember. The Jeep we used to own, had them in it all the time.

They're not the best filters and of a lower quality just based on price alone - but they're not as bad as people make them out to be.
