    Hello All,

1st post, please don't destroy me. Just purchased 2022 Tacoma 2.7 4x4 this month (6/22). As I am researching numerous things on this forum; DIY maintenance, mods, accessories, etc I came across all of the threads on the rust recall. I live in a salt region and started researching if Toyota resolved the frame issue by either redesign or using a different supplier. I cannot find a definitive answer if Toyota has fixed the frame issue for 2022 builds.

Does anyone have a link to an article addressing what steps Toyota has taken to correct frame issues on new builds? I searched this forum and google and did not find anything. I saw they are spraying frames in the recall with CRC; I plan on doing fluid film. I would hope Toyota addressed this problem once they discovered some older 3rd gens are having rust issues.

I really enjoy all of the posts on this forum and hope someone can give me some relief after making this purchase.

Any vehicle in the rust belt will need regular maintenance regardless of the frame or manufacturer. Some will suffer more than others due to design. However, Just coat it yearly and be done with it.

I live in Minnesota and while surface rust is rampant, I’ve not heard of a frame failing due rust on any reasonably modern automobile.

I'm in the same boat, just picked up a 22 Off Road. I'm just going to commit to coating it underneath every year in the garage regadless. If anything, it's a good habit I should start developing for myself and new cars anyways seeing as I live in Michigan.

Welcome to the forum :hattip: and congratulations on the new truck!

Modern deicing chemicals are far more aggressive than the old "rock salt" we grew up with, anything made of steel will rust.

You have a nice clean new truck, spend an afternoon doing a good Cosmoline job, keep the underside washed in the winter and inspect & reapply where needed every fall.

Keep the rust away and give the mechanical parts regular service and your new truck should last many miles and years.

All vehicles in the rust belt will rust. Best thing you can do is run it thru an undercarriage wash anytime you expose it to salt/ de icer. That stuff loves to collect on the little ‘shelf’ areas underneath the truck and attack the untreated metal. Using a yearly coating like Fluid Film isn’t a bad idea either.

Tacoma frames will still rust , as will Fords, Nissans, GM’s etc. , but yes Toyota has improved their corrosion protection from years past.

I have heard somewhere, I think it was in a thread around here that the 2018+ Tacoma's had some sort of tweaks to help prevent rust on the frames. Again I really don't think it helps for the rust belt. You will be farther ahead to just stay on top of treating the frame each year as others have mentioned. In this article they mention the 2011 to 2017 frames being eligible for warranty treatment. If you plan to keep the truck long term and live in the rust belt you will be better off being proactive instead of reactive with undercarriage rust on your new Tacoma. My 2020 has been through 2 mild PNW winters and we didn't get much snow and therefore little to no salt applied. We have had some bad winters in the past where there were above average salt applied. Prior vehicles showed some accelerated rusting in those years. I'm carefully watching my 2020 and may apply Cosmoline if needed in the future.

I believe they started some corrections on the 2019’s. Mine has plastic frame plugs with that gooey white snot they spray inside the frame. The snot is still all good in my frame plus I have fluid filmed my frame every fall before winter between 4-6 cans and I’m all good. My 2019 under carriage still looks new minus some surface rust and I live in Nebraska with some brutal winters with all the salt brine deicer crap they spray on the roads.

Nothing wrong here, it’s just the dump truck option improperly deployed. Another case of not reading the owners manual.

Hard to beat the cosmoline for more long lasting if in the rust/salt belt. I've tried others like fluid flim. Its fine if you like repeating the same cappy job every year. Our military uses cosmoline, so does mercedes, and bmw. They'd use fluid flim if they thought it was better option.

I tried FF, CRC, and Surface Shield. What a pain to crawl under there on my gravel driveway to apply it. I recently found out about https://corrosionfree.com/ They claim it's recommended by the Canadian military, and they have a warranty. I let a dealer apply it for $200. With their tools, they get into more nooks and crannies than I could with a rattle can. And it's applied only every 18 months. Considering the cost of 6-8 rattle cans, and the pain of crawling under there myself, and the limitations of coverage of the rattle can, I'll let the dealer do it. I had mine done last week.

I sprayed the frame of my 2010 annually up until Toyota made me have them treat it for the extended frame replacement coverage. My frame looked pretty good up until Toyota sprayed it with some heavy black product (spray done by a Toyota authorized service provider, not the dealer. I have no idea what product was used.)

I traded my 2010 in on a 2022 just a couple months prior to the frame coverage 12 year time period running out.

I’m taking the new truck to NH Oil Undercoating every fall. As much as I like performing my own maintenance, spraying the frame is a messy job.

    Welcome to the forum.

As others mentioned, annual or bi annual spray with woolwax or fluid film will help keep rust at bay.

I can agree with that if you have to crawl under the truck every year or so to repeat the job. Been over 2 years since i cosmolined my truck. So far just a 5 minute touchup if that on the leaf springs, otherwise still looks the same as before.

That was an interesting read. My interpretation is that the TSB calls for drying, cleaning and waxing the inside of the box frame section of the frame near the front. Spraying goop on (painted) exterior portions of the frame it not likely to have the same effect. Rust is notorious for forming where you can’t see it.
