Frame Issues. Should I undercoat?

Wow, Small world for sure, I used to work in Cranberry about 20 years ago. I sprayed the frame of my 2008 with Eastwood Anti Rust product and it worked great, no rust when I traded it for the 2015. I sprayed the 2015 with CRC Anti Corrosion and Eastwood stuff and expect no rust on this one either.

 

Tacky is good, dry is bad. What ever you use, if it drys, it hardens. That is why they don't paint frames from the factory. They aren't trying to piss everyone off. If paint scratches, it allows moisture which then migrates under the dried paint and can rust more severely. What ever stays tacky, adheres and seals moisture, keeping it from spreading. Wet, tacky, soft, all good. Dry and hard .....bad for undercoating as the frame takes a much more severe beating from road debri then the body which people tend to touch up regardless.

 

Did you use the stuff that is a yellow beeswax like color?

 

Yes, both the CRC and the Eastwood stuff are kind of an Amber Colored waxy type spray.

 

I thought they recommend that stuff for only inner cavities.

 

Nope, you can spray on any exposed areas.

Fwiw, here is my writeup from my krown experience yesterday

 

Ok guys. I did the krown treatment today. I have to say, i am sold. I am Very impressed with the whole process, and the service i received. the guy let me watch the whole thing, explained it to me, and did an Extremely thorough job. The whole underside of my truck is glistening, and dripping with the stuff. I know fluid film is proven and respected, but you just cannot do as thorough as a job with it at home unless you have some special equipment. The guy drilled holes in key places(all out of sight, inside the doors etc) , inserted a special wand and sprayed the krown behind the sheet metal on the whole truck. On the back, he removed the tailights, and inserted what had to be a 6 foot wand all the way down the insides of the bed, and sprayed. The inside of my bumper, tailgate, spare tire, hood, gas door, skid plate, absolutely everything is covered. I will be doing this every year to protect the truck. Pic one: all doors open for drilling and spraying, hood open for spraying, as well as gas door. the 6 foot wand inserted behind the bed sheet metalup on the lift, so he could spray leafsprings, everything in the wheel well areas, and the entire undersideeverything is dripping wet with the krown one of the hole plugs. All located inside the doors, out of sight. They look completely factory.some dripping coming from the tailgate. Dripping should stop within 24 hours. they do wash the vehicles to get overspray off after the krowning. I opted to wash it myself on the way home. Didn't want their dirty, gritty brush touching my paint.

 

I know a guy who owns 2 Krown franchises. My truck is an 09, and I live in Upstate NY (tons of salt here in the winter), and he said this stuff can completely stop the rust damage on my truck and prevent more. He said its way better than Ziebart. But of course thats his competitor, so of course he's gonna say that! But Krown looks like a much better product. He said all done on my truck for about $150. Again, way cheaper that Ziebart. They clean all the old salt residue off first (Ziebart doesn't do that) then treat it like skiergd011013's truck above. All in about an hour-hour and a half while you wait (Ziebart wants your truck all day at their shops here). Known also treats all the local municipal highway depts. plow trucks with this stuff. @Mademan925 Don't think we really have this problem unless we are driving on salty roads. But this is really cool.

 

Yes but my brother just got his recall notice from GM for his 2014 HD work truck. Supposedly the undercoat they used is cracking, falling apart and trapping some water and dirt/salt in the cracks. A quick look at his frame this weekend, and yes it is indeed falling apart already.

 

The stuff I saw on the 2015 was a soft wax type finish, it wasn't like a spray on but a dip finish. Maybe is was different that what they used in 2014 & earlier.
