I'm looking at an FSM "service data" page, and it references model ID codes like "VZN170L–PRPDKAB". I gather the "VZN170L" part is the "frame number", the rest further refines to model designation.

Where can I see a list of plain language descriptions of these codes (which models they specify)?

From the other end: Where do I find the particular number on my vehicle?

Kind of. The VIN has both the drive train and opton package info embedded. On vehicles sold in multiple countries, a Toyota VIN will also have a "destination".
Here is a link that will help you understand the letters and numbers.

As to where to find the number, look in the lower corner of the driver side of the windshield. You should be able to see it through the glass. Should also be on your title and vehicle registration paperwork.

Thanks, but I know my truck's VIN, and it bears no resemblance to any of those numbers! And I was already on that Toyota page, and saw those "frame numbers", before posting my questions.

After clicking on most of the frame numbers on that Toyota page, and inventorying the features listed under each, by trial-and-error I found the "complectation" (extended number) that describes my truck:

Do you spot any correlation between that number and my VIN number?

    Complectation: RZN171L-CRMDKAB
    VIN: 5TEWM72N23Z288xxx

    Neither do I.

So ... it seems neither the "complectation" or shorter "frame number" are displayed on the vehicle.

The "complecation" (I have never seen that word) is actually the "Katashiki" code. You can try some searches using that word, but you likely won't find a breakdown of this as it's primary usage is during the manufacturing stage of the vehicle.
