These plugs are on newer Tacos for what I assume is to assist with preventing snow, salt, road spray, etc. from getting inside the frame from the front wheel wells. The pics below show where to place what plugs where. Started ordering a few plugs at a time. I'll update this post with more pics and Part #'s as I get time. Each plug has a # on its face, but it doesn't correspond with the actual part number for the plug itself. Here's what I have matched up so far:

    90950-01983 = 0

    90950-01989 = 6

    90950-01991 = 7

    90950-01992 = 9

    90950-01987 = 4

    90950-01990 = 8

    90950-01A09 = 19

If anyone else cares to take a few pics and show the # on the plugs for locations I haven't gotten to yet, please do so. I only plan to do the wheel wells on my 05.

10-18-14 Update: Added another pic showing where plugs 4 and 19 go.

Love those holes with the "?".

There actually isn't much reason to spend a pile of money on the "factory" plugs. They can be made DIY easily enough out of plastic bits you can get in the hardware row at home depot or similar, and a tube of roofing tar.

FWIW: These plugs are a placebo. They don't address the BIGGEST hole where the majority of road crap gets in and murders the frame. Take a close look at the cab mounts that are just behind the front wheels. Notice that the road crap that sprays off the front wheels will spray straight up into those cab mounts! If you carefully look into the cab mounts with a flashlight, you will notice that the cab mounts are not simply welded onto the outside face of the frame, but that there is actually a HUGE HOLE in the frame's face at the back (inside) of the cab mount. Also notice that the cab mounts are immediately adjacent to the catalytic converters, which is noteworthy since the majority of 2nd gen frame rot problems are especially prevalent in this exact spot!

If you want to protect your frame, you need to plug the cab mounts!

Removed plastic plugs # 4 to rustproof the boxed in frame section behind the front wheels....6 out of the 8 plugs broke....The dealer wants $7.50 per plug... Whoa.....Are there any substitutes for these plugs?

Black duct tape works wonders..... 5 bucks a roll, enough to do the whole truck multiple times over.

Good idea for southerners but if he just got done rust proofing it, duct tape will not stick. I guess he could clean the frame (counter productive to rust proofing)and hope it sticks, but my guess is the rust proofing will seep under tape and lift it over time. Just my $0.02

Mine didn't. And apparently the kit isn't available in Canada. All new trucks here have the plugs so go figure.

I agree that the giant holes in the cab mounts are the #1 reason for frame rust in Gen 2's.

My truck is in for a frame swap right now and I went over to the dealership to see the progress. I noticed that they will be applying the frame plugs but they don't have a plug in the kit for the giant hole in the cab mount bracket. That hole is right behind the front tires and is exactly where my frame rusted from the inside. The service advisor and the Tech working on my truck are both awesome guys and helped me find a Toyota plug that they said will fit that hole.

The Toyota part # is 04007-23234

    IMG_4705.jpg

My truck will still be in for a few days but when it's out I will let you know how it fits.

By the way heres a pic of the rust hole the dealership created during the test. It was rusted from the inside out and notice the hole in proximity to the cab mount bushing on the other side. Dirt and road junk gets through the giant hole on the other side and sits and collects moisture and holds onto it. The heat from the catalytic converter and cooling speeds the deterioration. You can see all the dirt and road junk in the hole they poked through. I really hope the plug works at keeping the dirt and debris out which in turn lets the inevitable water that gets in there evaporate quickly.

Bad news - the Tech that thought he had a solution confirmed the plugs I mentioned above did not fit the giant hole in our Gen 2 frames near the cab mount. Looks like I'm back to using flex tape.

If anyone has a solution to cover this hole let's see it. We did the best we could to measure it using a micrometer from the Inside of the frame rail (yeah my Tech stuck his entire arm into the open end of the frme to measure the hole for me). I don't know how accurate this is but we showed a measurment of 2.2880". I searched high and low online for some kind of plug and I couldn't find anything.

I found some 2 3/4"- 3" diameter waterproof coated magnets on Amazon. They are designed to hang wreaths on doors but my guess is they will work great covering up the cab mount hole. I will let you know.
