My truck is past the expiration date for the frame recall, what options do I have to repair it?
I took it to a shop to have CVs replaced, and they called me concerned that the frame rust is pretty bad, that they were nervous just putting it on a lift (can see through the other side in spots). I am not a rich man, dont have the funds to buy a new truck and really need to figure out a way to save this one if possible. Not sure where to go from here? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It is a 2005 DCOR, 185k, live in Colorado.

@Red Baron can you help this guy out.

You can probably cut and replace pieces depending on how bad it is and the extent of the rust. I will say what Yota paid the dealership to do mine was over 13g the dealer said a customer would of paid closer to 18g for what all was involved in the frame replacement.

Another long shot option is to take it to a dealer have them fail the frame and see if they can't get approval if not petition corporate and see if you can't get some leniency.

Either way you go it's not going to be cheap.

I haven't see the extent of the rust, so it might not be as structurally compromised as it sounds, so you might want to consult with several body shop in your area before ppanicking. However, I would always be concerned about the quality of the work, especially of I had to go bargain shopping to get the work done. If however, you get a consistent message that the truck presents a real safety risk, you need to start putting your effort to find your next vehicle.

I'm assuming you were aware of the frame recall situation, and if not, sorry for your loss. Still, I don't think you have any recourse, or better financial option but to sell if you can (but would be a poor ethical option), or scrap the truck, and get a replacement. As much as you cannot afford this cost now, driving around and risking hurting yourself and possibly others will be a greater cost to you.

Unless you have experience with welding structurally important components, there I no feasible way to fix a rotting frame, that would be worth it. You'd likely be better off finding the same vehicle financially (just make sure the seller had their frame replaced already)..

Thanks for the input, head is spinning as to how to best proceed. I do not have the ability/space/skills to do any DIY stuff, so patching it up is really my only option right now. I have too much money tied up in this truck, and no means to buy something else. What ballpark price range did you spend to patch up the 4Runner?

Thanks man, I can actually breathe now :) That is really my only option, and I do have a friend of a friend that welds.

I would expect a new frame to cost $5k from Toyota
by that I mean ordered and picked up from the parts department to then install at home DIY

That's just the frame. The recall you get every frame nut and bolt, new LCAs, brackets, suspension bolts, etc. There's a lot on the recall beyond the frame.

I'd expect 10k in parts, rusted frame means rusted body mounts, bolts, control arms, brake lines.

You'd best be off selling it or drive it into the ground.

Just had my frame replaced last month, total bill was just south of $15K... at 207K miles I slid in with 5 months to go before my recall expired.
