First time buyer and still learning so trying to understand the things I need to watch out for... and one I know is rust on the frame. I am going to test drive a 2006 TRD OR tomorrow that I’m really interested in. I looked at it on Sunday and took a few pictures underneath but have no idea exactly what I’m looking at. Wondering if anyone sees any concerns from the pics? I see a little rust but doesn’t seem the be on the frame. Also what is the best way to determine if the frame has perhaps been repaired? All comments appreciated.

Rust is definitely a concern, especially on the frame. I see a couple of spots that were spray painted which would have me concerned that they are trying to cover up rust.

Overall it seems to be in decent enough shape but I would look closer at the frame near the engine/catalytic converters.

I would ask the seller if they will allow you to tap the frame with a ball peen hammer and if they deny you, walk away.

Where is the location of this truck? Not sure if that's rattlecan or rust treatment but there's no obvious bubbly patches of rust that looks concerning. In fact, the frame looks pretty good for an '06 besides the rusted OEM shocks. I don't see anything undercarriage in regards to excessive rust that would prevent me from buying this truck. Well.....about that bull bar....

Frame has been touched up, actually looks pretty decent. No glaring concerns from your pics. Have them put it up on a rack for a good look after your test drive, (bring a friend if need be). If they balk at that, walk. Be aware that this truck would be out of the time limit for the frame replacement campaign.

He doesn't like it. I have one on mine that I have smashed to crap and will be taken off when my front bumper comes in.

Its always an issue. Lol. Those type of hollow bull bars are weak and also prone to rust. They are damage multipliers in even minor fenderbenders because those bars will get crushed into the bumper and grille.

It looks to me that this truck got a new frame under the extended frame warranty campaign. Look at those leaf springs! Frame is super clean to be original for an 06.

    Hmm . . . none as yet, that's why i'm here . . .
Check all the brake lines that run on the frame and up under the hood, a good indicator if the frame has been changed. Underside does look real nice for an 06.

That truck no doubt got a new frame at some point. I'd still be hesitant as it appears someone painted it to either hide or inhibit rust. Take it to a good independent Toyota mechanic you can trust.

I know there was a recall on the Leaf Springs.. I just called Toyota and provided the VIN and they are stating the replacement hasn’t been completed by their records. I am clueless as to what a leaf spring looks like but based on your comment, this truck looks to have a new one and installed properly!?

Yes the one in the photo looks new and I believe Toyota replaces the leaf springs when they do a frame swap. That’s why I mentioned it.

It sucks to say it but be thorough when you look over the frame.
When it is painted up like that look even closer. Use a hammer. If they get pissed oh well.
These trucks hold up well with the sheet metal and that makes it easy to overlook the frame.
Just assume the frame is crap and try to prove it is not.
Expect the worst and you may find a good one. They are out there.
