Fake (or at least misleading) news.

Many "news" agencies reported this a fait accompli late last year when in fact it was just that a proposed settlement agreement had been reached. No specific amount was agreed to in the settlement, though industry pundits "estimated" that "it might" cost Toyota "up to" $3.4B. You can find out more here--http://www.toyotaframesettlement.com/.

But the basics are that there is no actual (as opposed to proposed) agreement and there will not be until after a Fairness Hearing on 4/27/2017. And then; pending any further appeals, amendments, etc.; there may be a final judgement on June 26, 2017.

In any event the OP is (as he indicated) not part of the suit's member class as he purchased his truck after 12/2/2016:

The good news for him, as NOT a class member, is that he is free to independently pursue Toyota, class members who do not "opt-out" will have released Toyota from liability.

That's the rust belt for you. Truck will rot away before it mechanically die.

Thought I would add pictures of my 2010 with 14K miles on it. The truck spent its life in Rochester, NY where they salt the roads like crazy.

Wow you guys are screwed.... I took a wire wheel to mine thus weekend and shot it with some paint.... it was literally just orange from rock strikes and the winter... no scaling no perforation, it all came off to "white steel" in a few seconds. Realistically you guys should do a frame off sandblast the bitch and coat her in epoxy and put it all back together everything else is just temporary

Lol, I think "screwed" is an exaggeration. And you know its not realistic for the average person to take the frame off and dip it in epoxy...

Lol you're right but it's the only way to stop it. I used to be a senior foreman for a sandblasting company we saw this type of stuff all the time... I blew holes through many a frame, boat, tank, structural I beam lol

You can buy a new frame for $4200 (2nd gen p/n 51001-04762), shipping undoubtedly makes it closer $5 grand--but if my frame looked like many people have posted I would rather buy a new one and properly treat it than try to repair, clean up and properly treat the old one.

Except that most of these trucks aren't worth putting that kind of money into--just fly down here, buy one that isn't a ball of rust and drive it home...

Yeah, except you have to sell the rusty truck to another unsuspecting person. I'll make a decision after the lawsuit is finalized and they deny me the frame....

Just got back from getting the frame inspected. Surface rust. Treat it, Use the Eastwood internal frame treating, move on with life.

That will coat the inside, but I would also get it under coated yearly. What would it hurt?

My first post I linked to a completed frame restoration. I plan on removing the bed. Scrape/Needle to remove surface flaky rust. Etch and Prep, Por 15, chassis black paint then twice a year fluid film. Remove the tow hitch and put on a treated aftermarket hitch. I will photo document the process, but I think I'll wait until summer to take on this project.

That sounds like a ton of work. Hope it works out for you. How hard is it to remove the bed?

It's only the 6 bolts in the bed, disconnect the gas tank, and unplug the electrical harness. It is supposed to be easy...we shall see. I figured if I can work on it out in the open, it will cut down on the cursing factor and allow me to really get at it. It will also allow me to take lots of pictures.

Just found this great video on a complete frame restoration. God knows if I take my bed off and it looks like this, I'm spending my money on a lawyer, not on a welding machine. Informative info on how to remove your bed and gas tank starts at 2:30 for those interested.

So being from Massachusetts and having done several frame replacements something has always bugged me. NOT TO START A BIG THREAD FIGHT, just trying to figure out this way of thinking. Why is it that people who live in the rust belt, purchased a known rusted vehicle, never undercoated when new, feel they are entitled for these parts to be replaced for free? Several of my vehicles years ago could be entered by climbing threw the rust hole in the rear quarter, never once crossed my kind to sue.

No worries. I bought mine used and the seller may not have known/failed to disclose the class action lawsuit that covers this issue. I did some research before purchasing, and there was no recall for my model. I was unaware of the class action suit. If Toyota acknowledges that the frames are a problem, and they have, then I feel I am entitled to compensation. If, when I inspect my frame and it is just surface rust, then no problem, scrape treat coat and go on my way.

I think theres a big difference between vehicles that rust and cause huge safety concerns and vehicles that just have rust spots on the body that dont cause safety concerns.

a frame should not rot out in 10 years if they warranty it for that long
