I already have a thread going about frame rust. It was getting long so I thought I would post some pictures in a new one. I take the truck to get the frame checked tomorrow. I don't know if this is bad enough to get replaced or not. The frame is in real good shap from the rear of the lead springs forward. It's the part from the leaf spring back that looks bad. It has no hole just you can flak it away. I pulled a little on it and pulled a section off the frame. It looks so bad i will not be pulling my trailer with this truck any more. Anyway here are some pics.

Pretty rotten, man. I'm no expert, but I would guess that will not pass inspection.
    Good luck!

Holy smokes, I can't see how they would decide to NOT replace your frame.

Just because you don't see any holes doesn't mean they aren't there. They may be just covered, take a ball peen to it and start tapping around.

It does look pretty bad, surprised you don't see any holes! Looks like a sunken ship!

Yes it was sprayed. It's under warranty until March 2017. I had to call Toyota HQ to find out. Local deal was no help. It looks like it all got sprayed but that part.

Okay finally after heard back from the service manager of my local dealer. After several calls I got to talk to him. I thought he was avoiding my calls for some reason. Kinda seemed like a dick on the phone. Kept saying my frame since it was sprayed was not under warranty any more. He said once it was sprayed that was it. I gave him my case number and told him the person I talked to at Toyota HQ. So after a week I called him back. Voice mail of course. This was Monday when I called. So Wednesday night at 8:30 he called me back. Of course I did not get to the phone in time to answer. Any way he was super nice on the voice mail. He said he was 99% sure they were going to replace the frame. Said he was going to place the order for the new frame the next morning. He said he would be calling me back in a few days. I tried to call him back but the dealer ship was closed. I guess its good I will be getting it replaced. That is was I was wanting.

Just had my frame replaced on my 01' Tacoma XtraCab, my frame looked about the same as yours. I had a fist sized hole next to the gas tank! Pretty scary to find out! The only thing they forgot was to connect the four-wheel drive and keyless entry, so make sure everything works. But, everything is all good now! 300,000 miles here I come!

Has rust been an issue for people who don't OR or live in salt filled coastal areas?

Thankfully, rust is a foreign concept here in the South West. My gen 1 frame is entirely rust free.

Hey Guys I am brand new to the Toyota world but I just recently (10/2/16) purchased a 1995 Tacoma 4x4. I had always loved the looks of these little trucks and I ended up purchasing one. I didnt notice that the frame had som rust damage, not much but its got some. Is there anything i can do about this? Would i have to purchase a new frame? or does this recall cover my truck. I doubt it since is 21 yrs old but just wanted to ask. Thank you. Any info is greatly appreciate it.

truck looks good but unfortunately the buy back program for your truck expired some time ago. If there is damage/rot to the frame your best bet would be to weld it up yourself or to have a shop do it.

Did you have to pay anything out of pocket for the replacement or parts?

I did come out of pocket some, there were parts that Toyota just would not cover. I believe Toyota should have covered everything that associated with the tear down to replace the frame but they didn't. My total cost was about 1200 but that included parts that I wanted to be replaced as well. I had them swap out the cab mounts, LBJ, charcoal canister, carrier bearing, and some other parts as well, all OEM except for carrier bearing.

nope, the frame rust campaign for 1995-2000 models is expired since loooooooooong ago. The only thing you can do is fix it yourself if you know how to weld or know someone who does, but still, yours looks like it's pretty toast and too late :/

Bang on it thoroughly with a hammer to see how bad the rust is and to what extent it is rusted though, you'll have a better idea if it is salvageable or not
