My apologies if this has been addressed elsewhere already. I just bought my truck 6 days ago. I crawled underneath and the NY frame is pretty rusty. Pretty sure it's all just surface rust at this point as it's only a '10. I've been reading up on things here and am now making plans to treat my frame, but I won't be able to do it this winter as my detached garage (the one with room to work) is not heated and I am not laying on freezing concrete for hours on end while I do it. Not to mention, I usually work 7 days a week so there would not be time for the treatment to cure properly before I'd be right back out on the salty roads. So my question is, should I park in my garage (the one under the house which stays about 55° all winter) and risk worsening rust, or do I park outside/in detached garage all winter and have my oil all sludgey when starting in 10° or below?? Is 4-5 months in the warmer garage going to make that much difference if I wait until spring to treat my frame?

I would park in the warmer garage if you can. There are also several rust treatments that you can spray on that will get you to the spring if you want to address the rust more fully then.

A member just posted a near dissertation on rust treatment today, I would check out that post because it has links to dozens of products and is full of info about the frame rust issues.

I personallly used a rustolium conversion spray and a couple hours later used rustolium frame paint to cover it over and let it cure overnight.

    Good luck

I'm new. here, but not new to these issues. If you can park inside, park inside. I wouldn't worry too much about what one winter will do. It seems every winter there are a few days here and there when it's a bit warmer and everyone goes to the car wash. You can always wash that road salt off on one of those days and possibly even treat it. Main thing is to get it cleaned up after winter. If you can spray something from underneath, great, and then next fall get something on that will protect over the winter months. Someone just went through a lot of work to combine all the rust issues and treatment ideas into one thread. I'll try to get the link, or search it. More info than you'll ever want :)

Thanks guys, I noticed that thread after this one posted. Oops! I can park inside. I prefer to park inside. I always thought parking inside was better, then I read that heat can make rust worse faster and someone said it was better to park outside in winter with salty roads and I was like, "whaaaa??" and thus my question. So thanks!! :)
