Why would Toyota be the "go to" contact for information about the class action suit (or did you actually call the law suit's attorneys, who have nothing to do with Toyota)?

And what does the 3rd gen leaking differential recall have to do with the 2nd gen ('05 to '10) frame rust class action law suit?

I didn't say Toyota was the "go to," but they've been far more knowledgeable than anyone thus far.

And sorry for mentioning that instead of an announcement regarding frame rust today there was an announcement for a different recall. Surely there have been less-relevant posts in the 141 pages of this thread.

But, fuck me, I guess. Thanks for your condescending note. I'll do better. Promise.

I apologise for that, had to deal with some ongoing issues with my (93 yo) father today--and a number of people who spent most of the day talking "around" the real problem. You caught me right after that and I should have kept my mouth shut following the sage wisdom of Thumper the rabbit --"if you can't say something nice, say nothing."

See TW Thread "Toyota Frame Settlement Postcard" post # 421. Fairness Hearing was scheduled to be held yesterday (4/27/2017)--it appears it was held, Cliff /"cliffyk" found a brief summary minutes document of the hearing and posted copy in post # 421. To quote Cliff "Deemed under submission means that the court has accepted the motions for attorney's costs and the final order, and will (someday) issue a final order. This could be next week, next month, or next year--your guess is as good as mine..." Yes, them attorneys appear to get their money first.

    TRDSport beat me to it...

I uncovered this summary of yesterday's hearing. The judge approved motions for attorney fees and final judgement, "deemed under submission" means they have been accepted by the court--the next thing will be rendering a final judgement. Could be next week, next month, next year or next decade--the wheels of justice most often barely move...

Couldn't be happier. I just bought my 04 Taco double cab TRD and the seller had just gotten back from West Virginia with it. I paid 13,000..needs front brakes, rear axle seals. No problem...the seller failed to look underneath and see brand new frame, leaf springs, shocks, struts etc etc...the underneath is brand freaking new. They only caused 2 issues with the frame replacement...they pulled the wiring harness at the rear differential lock and it needs minor repair (wiring only) about 90 bucks. They also put the wrong bumper on. It's held on by only 1 bolt on each side, no place for another bolt. I'm baffled by that but I'm getting a solid steel bumper with gas can/water can removable brackets fabricated for it so....who cares. Bottom line, the truck is solid and he could have charged me 14K to 15k...frame was replaced in January of 2016 with 117,000 miles. It now has 118,550

In Just Can't believe how well these Tacoma's hold their value. Yours is 13 years old and still worth a lot of bucks. My 2012 is now 5 years old and blue book say it's only about $4-5 K less than I paid for it (15K Miles). That's about 1K + a year to own this .... I'm glad so many are being well taken care of for many year old frames. I'll buy again.

Here is my experience with the 2nd gen frame recall. Here are some pics of my TRD Tacoma during the process. Keep in mind this is the 2nd time this process has been done to my truck. 1st time in Toyota did not preform the process properly...so they say. All the undercoat had washed away in a year exposing the rust again. I really don't think the undercoat they put is really going to help anything. But I guess it's better than nothing a second time around. This time I told the dealership it would be done in my terms and I would document the process with pictures.

    After scraping and sanding

    Parrfin wax

    IMG_1504.jpg

Final coat - I made toyota remove my gas tank and hitch and got them to also treat all my cross members.

    IMG_1502.jpg
    IMG_1498.jpg
    IMG_1500.jpg

When they drop my hitch, they also removed my bumper with it. Had to throw old bumper and bumper support in garbage

    IMG_1464.jpg

Sandblasted and painted old tow hitch and bumper support from used bumper assembly that I purchased from scrap yard for $400

    IMG_1488.jpg

    Bumper painted and reassembled

    IMG_1497.jpg

Will see how long this lasts. I guess I am happy because there is no holes in my frame. But I really doesn't look pretty underneath the mask they put on.

So is Toyota supposed to coat my frame regardless? I have corrosion but no holes. I can't seem to find technical info on the TSB no matter how much looking I do.

So far so good on my 2010 with 72K which is a MA truck all of its life. That said I am waiting till the details of this are locked in before I do anything. I plan to keep the truck a few more years and certainly don't want them spraying it and telling me to go shit in my hat if it rusts through after..

Mitch, This current initative is a class action law suit, not a Toyota TSB nor a recall. I too have been unable to get hold of the instructions for the previous rust proof coating of '05-'08 Tacomas. However, there are some clues within TW that are rather obscure. For copy of the Toyota instructions for the procedure for Canadian Tacomas. Refer to the thread:

Thread: “Limited Service Campaign for Corrosive Resistant Compound” Post: # 465 by dogaminator on August 11, 2014.

That is the Technical Instructions for Customer Satisfaction Campaign (CSC) # 173 for 2005-2008 Model Year Tacoma. Warranty Coverage Extension For Tacoma Rust Corrosion Perforation in Canada.

I have not seen the version for USA, but this should give us an idea what the rust proofing coating entails. Note there are plugs to fill manufacturing holes in the frame to help keep slush, snow, salt, etc. from getting inside the box sections. This in my opinion is one of the key items.

Anyway, for what it is worth find attached CSC # 173 file from dogaminator's post

Good luck and keep the faith - we will prevail!

Create a Toyota owners account with your VIN. It will show any outstanding recalls. Mine had frame replacement which included basically an entirely brand new suspension and the spare tire holder plate.

My understanding is that if they don't find any perforations in your frame they coat it. 1 perforation and your frame and basically about everything attached to it gets replaced. I would call customer service. Also create a Toyota owners account. If you have an outstanding recall it explains it in detail

They're definitely the best truck on the market. As long as it hasn't had serious damage, the engine is maintained and you keep your interior looking good it will hold value. I bought a 2000 at auction in 2002 for 9500 plus 1250 fee to dealer that took me. So 10750 investment. I put 55000 miles on it, vast majority of those miles were highway miles between Arlington Virginia and East Tennessee. I moved to Hawaii in 07 and sold it for 11750....made a profit. You can't beat that. I treated that thing like my child...it looked better after I sold it than when I bought it

New to Tacoma world ! Has anyone with a new or almost new truck primed and painted it much better than the factory job . My 2015 trd pro has only 4856 miles and stored during salt season in Nj but plan to spend over a week scuffing down frame prepsol frame and inner frame then 3 coats epoxy primer followed by 3 coats of Eastwood extreme chassis black ! l will prep the heck out of itnso bonding is good , mask with aluminum foil with wheels. Skids. Spare rear shocks. Exhaust. Removed . Top of frame is 1 inch from floor so some paint will get on. top somewhat. All done with paint gun no rattle cans . Any other ideas or experience with this would be appreciated. Going to do this in June or July . Thanks all and good luck with your tacomas !
