WOOOOOHOOOOO! I knew with that much rust, there had to be a hole somewhere.

Those "trouble" spots have NOTHING to do with the catalytic converter being there. The issue is the front CAB MOUNTS. Salty water sprays off the front tires straight up into the cab mounts. At the back of the cab mounts, there is a giant hole in the frame, exposing it to the inside of the boxed section of the frame, so that salt water that sprays off the wheels is shot up and into the boxed section of the frame right there beside the catalytic converter(s).

So...I should clean this up and let the salt eat it some? Or am I screwed? This was hiding behind my under coat, as I scrapped my chisel just went through.

Ah fuck dude. Mines a Rugged Trail too, freaking awesome Tacoma. Being an 08 you’re on the clock, but don’t rush. Please go back and read my previous posts most are on this thread the rest in another. Toyota disqualified my frame from the program due to “outside influence” because my thumb went through the frame. Can’t be any bends, shiny, tool marks, etc. Make sure you talk to service manager before you take it in and you only found it, didn’t touch it.

figure our when the drop dead date for you frame it. maybe let it sit for a month or two.

But I wouldn’t say shit don’t even say you found it. just take it in for the inspection.

But congrats on the new frame. think about shocks/ steering rack ect.
much cheaper when the trucks apart.

Hash is probably right. Unless you know the SM is reasonable, don’t say a word. Figure out when you’re deadline is. If it’s springish, then the warm moist weather and the salt will cover up your oops. You may even end up with a second hole like I did.

Spoke with toyota rep tonight, looks like I'm covered until august of next year. I guess I will wait. Thanks everyone, after reading tacobreaker's posts I'm worried.

So, I just passed frame inspection yesterday at the dealer "Toyota Direct (Columbus, OH)". As part of the recall, the dealer sprayed the entire frame with anti corrosion solution.
Keeping fingers crossed that it will delay any rust issues in the future. By the way, the dealership was super professional and I would highly recommend for anyone looking to get their frame inspected. :fingerscrossed:

Also I would if you have the luxury depending on location call around and see what dealers have done the most replacements.

What dealership did the replacement for you? Or maybe what area are you in and I can guess? Thanks!

Well I was the proud owner of an 07 model until I read this thread. Currently a southern truck so hasn’t seen any salt thank goodness. What can I do to prevent it in the future if I need to take it up north for a few days? This thread scared the crap out of me possibly rightfully so... fluid film treatment??

Yeah do the fluid film or wash off after you get the truck safely off our roads. Southern truck *should* be fine, but still worth looking.

As far as who’s done lots of replacements, sounds like Cain Toyota has done a ridiculous amount of these and the service manager seemed like a really good guy. I’d probably not be in this boat if I would have talked to him first. If I get over being pissed, I’d probably go there for a purchase just for the opportunity to work with him again.

i came out really lucky!! bought an 2010 Tacoma from an older gentleman for a good price and the frame looked pretty good, and the old man told me that he never got the recall papers and because the frame looked so good he never even tried to get it look at, so after I bought it I brought it over to the Toyota dealership here in Miramichi NB Canada and right away they approve it for a frame replacement ( small hole by one of the weld) they said it could take up to 9 months for the new frame to arrive but only two months after they called me over saying my frame was in, so that Thursday I dropped it off, they gave me a brand new Tundra for the week. by next Wednesday the truck was ready, all was good but a small coolant leak that they fix right away at no charge. they even slapped on a safety check for free ( we need safety inspection each year 35$) so now my trucks drives better than ever and hopping to keep it for many years

So many good stories. Need to convince myself it was the original dealer that screwed me and Toyota just went along with it. Really hesitant after stalking coloradofans for awhile.

IMG_0203.jpg IMG_0188.jpg My 08 DCLB TRD sport just failed its frame inspection this past week with 101k Miles on it. Hole at the exhaust support bracket. I'm hoping for a cheap and smooth replacement process. After looking things over, the shocks and brake calipers are the most rusted parts I can see, other than the frame. I took pictures to document everything before the dealership got a hold of it. Brakes seem to be working fine. Original rotors and just put first set of pads on it at 95 k . Any recommendations on shocks? Not really looking for performance, just a smooth ride. Any other parts worth having Toyota tackle while their in there?

Good luck to you! The replacement on my 07 was pretty smooth. Only recommendation they asked me to replace was my rear shocks since they were rusted through. Charged me around $120 for some Offroad Bilsteins and didnt charge me labor. I was happy.

My undercarriage is was similar to yours in some aspects, if I have the tools and time, I'd love to take off some of these parts and grind down the rust then protect them.

    Good luck!

Update, just got a call from the local dealer, Toyota has qualified my '08 for a new frame. I was a little surprised, figured I'd get a fresh coating & be sent on my way. They said new frame would be in 2-3 weeks, 3-4 days for the switch, free loner, etc. Damn, Christmas came early this year!

What the heck! Am I the only one that got told to piss off? Lmao.

Merry Christmas to you! Also, I’d consider talking to the service manager about how he’d handle any extras you’d want taken care. If all you need to cover is the parts bill and no/minimal labor, might as well.

Thanks, was already mentioned on the phone. It's in the works. I replaced the rear shocks a couple of months ago, the (original @165K) fronts are on my list for them to do while it's apart. May be some other things too, I'll find out when I see exactly what their policy is.
