I think there are a bunch of things that are worth paying for to have done for maintenance reasons. The rack is certainly right up there. Many people have had problems with aftermarket racks, so OEM is the only way to go. Replacing the rack when the truck is not all torn apart is a bitch job, so if that’s not something you’re able to do yourself, now is definitely the time. Even if it is something you can do, you need to evaluate your money saved buying from a cheaper source vs. the hours spent changing that thing. At the same time, PS pressure and return hoses should be done. However, OEM is about $300 and Napa is about $80.

On my Taco, I bought a used 70K mile rack and Napa hoses and changed it myself. It was a bitch job but I saved a pile of money. I know I’m taking a gamble on a used rack, but I was willing to take that risk.

Why should you pay labor for the rack replacement. Same amount of work if they swapped the old one into the new frame?

They want $919 for OEM steering rack. Any reason why the service guy would recommend after market? He seemed to think what they use is good. OEM was 500 more.

I would go OEM. Particularly if you get someone else to do the work for free

I went to dealership and talked to the parts guy at the counter about OEM and the aftermarket steering rack. I think he said CSV makes it. The OEM only has 1 yr parts and labor warranty and the aftermarket has lifetime on the part. I guess I am going to stick to aftermarket.. Hope its not a mistake.

    Thanks

In many cases the dealer won't stand behind the part if it isn't OEM. That's why I'm thinking of skipping the rock auto shopping spree and getting all the parts at the dealer.

That’s what parts guy told me about the warranty. That’s why I went with them as oppose to OEM. They are 575 off the dealer parts website. But only had a year warranty.

Does that warranty include labor? Else it’s not good because labor is more than the part cuz it’s such a bitch to install

Not after the 1st year. Just the part after that. I think SA said book time was like 14 hrs to replace the rack normally.

I recently received a rust-related memo from Toyota and wanted to share.

Oh shit, WA was previously covered with pre 2011 MY. I guess not on 2011+.

Yeah, I noticed that as well and it doesn't make sense as, depending on where a WA resident lives, temps/roads can beat up a Taco. I've been to most of the places listed on the memo, so I plan to get my truck looked at. I don't see anything obvious, but I'd like to make sure before anything gets out of hand!

My truck was a WA truck it's whole life and qualified for replacement. Sold originally in Yakima, then spent some time in Spokane and then I brought it over to the Seattle area. There used to be a time where they used salt quite liberally around here untill the fish lickers raised a fuss. Now its was chemical deicer which is fish friendly but not much better for vehicles and in extreme conditions the use of salt has been approved for use.

Things to look for when I pick up my truck after the frame replacement?:
Alignment: Wheels, Hood, bumper, cap, bed?
Breaks: ABS how it feel/work, parking brake, brake fluid?
Climate Controls: Heat/AC high low defrost?
Alarm: Remote Start. motion sensor, windows down/up
    Radiator fluid level correct?
    Trans: Feels/shifts normal
    Light: High/lows blinkers
Steering: Seems like its supposed to?
    4WD: engage-test

Look underneath for broken clips other abnormal repairs?

Is there anything else to look out for when I pick it up? Did I miss anything?
I told the SA before I drop the rental car off I want to take my truck for a ride.
I have never been through this before and I am just trying to be prepared and have an idea on what to look out for.

    Thanks.
