Ok, a new question: For those of us getting new frames (and the associated parts); are there any semi-experts out there who can tell what things to look when I get the truck back (besides the obvious like does it seem to run and look ok).
    Thanks

Good Point...and this makes me wonder.....

Is Toyota offering any kind of 'Warranty' after the install? Faulty installation.... or whatever..?? Say for example - one month later, you experience electrical problems because the tech got the wiring harnass wedged somehwere and it wore thru?

    Just thinking out loud...

Indeed. Thanks for posting the photos and the invoice. Looks like you can avoid the upcoming leaf spring recall... Pryoil is a Valvoline brand, but it isn't advertised as Dexron II or III compatible: http://www.valvoline.com/products/brands/pyroil/power-steering-fluid/108

Note the giant gaping hole between the 3rd and 4th crossmembers. That's difficult to repair with any sort of longevity.

    2005 tacoma2005 Access Cab Manual

    [IMG]A word of warning
My 2005 Tacoma was recently approved for frame replacement. rental vehicle was offered and toyota person stated that my vehicle insurance would be valid for the rental. I checked with my insurer and they 1st stated that there was a 45 day limit on insurance for the rental (could take 3-4 months for frame replacement). My insurer checked with home office and their reply was, 'since toyota elected to offer rental, my insurance would not be in force during the rental period and that it was up to toyota to pay for the rental and the rental insurance. Called dealer back and he was dumbfounded and I requested he call the corporate office. No reply.
The toyota dealer has 40+ trucks awaiting frame replacement. I wonder if all these customers are riding around in rental vehicles thinking they have insurance when they don't! I would strongly advise for everyone to check with insurance carrier about this.

Update: I finally decided to contact Toyota Corporate Headquarters with this situation since there have been conflicting answers. Contacted 2 days ago, as of today, no reply.

Took my '06 to the dealership on Monday as was told that I had a hole in it, and I would be getting a new frame. Frame was ordered and I was told to expect 4-6 weeks for delivery. I'm really surprised they are not doing a buy-back; my truck is 9.5 y/o with 128k miles. I'd really like to know what the final cost of this repair will be...
After reading the many posts regarding this subject, I hope my truck is repaired quickly and correctly. Well let you all know how it comes out.

Don't hold your breath on the 4-6 weeks. It's more like 4-6 months.

Valvolines response to the use of Pyroil

thank you for contacting Valvoline™ Product Support with your concerns.

The Valvoline™ Pyroil™ Power Steering Fluid would not be recommended for use in your Toyota. We feel as if this product may not cause any damage to the system, however we do not no what the effects could be long term, if left in the system. We recommend having the fluid exchanged with the proper product at your earliest convenience.

Guess I will be taking it back in

Well guys, I took this opportunity, and just signed the paperwork on a 2015 tundra......
Just wasn't comfortable with them taking an 06 with 212,000 apart and putting it back together again the same way.

You are completely wrong about the Toyota paying for the insurance. I know because I had a huge fight with the regional manager for Toyota about this issue. You are solely responsible for the rental insurance. Toyota will not provide any coverage or let you use any part of the $37 per day recall refund to pay for insurance. Again I know this because I can get deals on rental cars and asked if I got a cheaper rental could I use the left over money to cover the insurance fee. The manager said that they will not pay anything for ins coverage because they are not going to be responsible liability that could come from the rental car. long story short I demanded my truck back because they would cover the insurance and also because they refused to give me a vehicle with 4x4. you can't make it up my road with a 2wd car due to the hill I live on... Toyota didn't care.

    Then you got screwed.
I had a rental for 4 days for my frame inspection and did not have additional insurance. I also hit a pheasant, went thru the grill of the loaner and at no cost to me.

So how did it work, they took your Tacoma and gave you a figure for trade in? Did they account for the frame replacement in any way?

They didn't really account for the new frame, I was more interested in compensation for the new suspension I had put on. They really weren't interested in the money I was saving them by getting out of a rental for months early, or the money they saved by not needing to replace the LCAs or the leaf pack. They said all the money and expenses that are incurred from the frame replacement gets packaged up and billed to DANA. I got 8,000 for a truck with 212,000 miles on it, my purchase price for the tundra was 33,500, and I got 0.9% apr. I was pretty happy with that. Now I have a blank slate to start modding, and a larger truck for my soon to be expanded family.
I've already bought a pro grill for it.

Interesting, I've thought about trading it in for a newer Tacoma and talked to a salesman but he said they would completely ignore the frame replacement, - no more, no less.. They would basically base the numbers on year and miles..

They told me the difference between this recall and the 1st Gen recall was that the 1st Gen was a design flaw, which falls on toyota, and that's why they did the double blue book value deal on them. This time DANA is at fault, so toyota isn't losing on this.

Sell it independently to someone with half a mechanical brain. Should have no problem making money on Tototas dime. Just have them stick their head underneath the truck and see the new frame and suspension components.

i just scheduled my frame inspection on my 06 with 100,0xx miles. i assumed maybe a 5-10% of cars were going to need the frame replaced, so i figure i would just get the cleaning and undercoating. but i asked the dealer (Philadelphia area) and was shocked to hear that about 1/3 of trucks were getting a new frame. that's a bit scary, and now i assume i am going to need one as i spent two years in upstate NY. Anyway, the dealer has +-18 tacomas sitting in their overflow parking lot all together. i drive by there regularly as its on my way to home depot, and i just assumed it was trucks for sale but paying closer attention and realizing how many there were, no, this is the pile of cars waiting the 3.5 months for the frames to be manufactured and delivered, but i guess once it is determined you need one, you get 3.5 months worth of rental probably a corolla? how does a corolla serve the same function as a truck i wonder. i am told i can keep my truck while waiting for the frame, but have to sign some sort of waiver. oh well. at this point i am not sure if its a good thing to get a new frame or not. sure its new stuff (above and beyond just the frame) but having the truck completely disassembled and reassembled doesn't sound good.

This has probably been asked. However, do you need to be the original owner for recall to be done?
